Great Time to Buy LEO Trade-In's

We have recently discussed this on the Forum. There are some great deals to be had on .40 S&W LE trade-ins.

Attached are pictures of a Sig P226 I picked-up yesterday in .40 S&W. It is from the Auburn, Alabama LE. It is in very good condition. I would rate it at least 90% with a slight mar or two and a little visible wear on the grips. I could not pass with the price at $369.00. It is a DA/SA with Decocker. The night sights are even still bright, and the pistol came with 2 magazines.

I will also acquire a .357 Sig barrel for it and Rosewood grips.

Very nice find.
Enjoy and use it well.
Don't ya' just wonder why perfectly good stuff gets abandoned for something else by government agencies?
It's hard to imagine that anyone who can shoot a 9mm well having trouble with a .40.

OP I have a P226 in .40 S&W that I paid significantly more for, and I still think I got a great deal. That is genuinely a great deal for an excellent service pistol, regardless of your opinion of the caliber. It is my remaining .40 S&W pistol since it is such a great gun to take to shoot at the range.

I'd be in like Flynn if these were in 9mm.

As is, it is still a fantastic deal. My P229 in .40 currently wears a P228 upper, so it runs 9mm.

To acquire a P226 9mm upper via x-change kit is prohibitively expensive, and there isn't really a market for used slides.

If you wanted to get a Sig P-Series, these are a great deal.

This one was on GunBroker. The seller has a couple more currently listed and starting around $320.00. I did not have to pay shipping since it was close by, but paid local sales tax.

I have a German P226 in 9mm imported by Tysons Corner I won back in March followed by a P229 a few weeks later.

There are a lot of Sigs, S&W's, Glocks and others in .40 S&W as law enforcement trade-in's out there. Many are being sold by law enforcement distributors who take trade-ins.

This afternoon, I registered the new pistol on the Sig Sauer website and got a 20% off promo code. With the code, I ordered a .357 Sig barrel and a set of rosewood grips.

I know guys running FFLs out of their homes that won't even take 40SW pistols on consignment now. It's nuts. That's a great deal on a good pistol.

The market is flooded with LEO 40 S&Ws. Tons of agencies are dumping them they are everywhere. Sigs, Glocks S&W M&Ps etc... tons of different configurations and setups.

That's an awesome price.

I've been meaning to diversify calibers a little bit. During the last panic, .40 was one of the only calibers available. With recent political events, it's less of an issue, but I'd still like to get one while they are still available.

I'd love a police Sig in .40, but I haven't seen one that cheap anywhere.

Yes, this is a great time to buy .40S&W pistols! (My favorite defense caliber due to high capacity, soft-shooting, and the exceptional performance of the 180 gr Federal HST bullet.). I've been buying my forties at new gun prices, but the LE trade-ins represent great value indeed.

WVSig, you indicate the "police are dumping them" but do you have information that they are changing calibers or reordering in .40 also. I know of two med size agencies that simply renewed all of their ten year old .40 cal pistols with new .40's. There is a lot of talk about the .40 being abandoned but much of it is un substantiated. By the way upon retirement I traded my issue G 23 at a local shop for a new G 19 (OD frame) that I use as a house pistol....so much for caliber loyalty.

Ibmikey, My understanding is much of law enforcement is falling in line with the FBI shifting to 9mm.

I have purchased three Sigs since March from the same distributor to law enforcement. They are all within about the same age grouping of around of the year 2000, give or take a few years. One was from Opelika, AL, one from Pelham, AL and this one from Auburn, AL.

It could be an age of pistol thing, a 9mm thing, or a combination of the two. Although one of the three was a P226 in 9mm. This distributor has been selling a lot of them and all on GunBroker. The seller is great to deal with and has a very high positive feedback rating.

xcc rider, I do not want to confuse anyone. The pistols I have won at auction are not Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) guns. CPO's have been back to the factory for refurbishment and come with a one year warranty. They also come with a higher price.

The ones I have acquired went from the owner (law enforcement agency in this case) to the trade-in buyer, often the distributor that sold the new replacement firearms to law enforcement. They are not refurbished but rather sold as is. Often the night sights are dimming due to age and there are handling and carry mars, scratches and wear showing on the gun. Many believe the guns have seen a lot of carry time and few rounds out the barrel. This probably depends upon the department and the individual law enforcement officer.

The pistols I have acquired at around four hundred dollars would cost more like six hundred to seven hundred dollars if they were CPO's. The CPO's are probably worth the additional price especially to a new gun owner.

I am not aware of any other manufacturer doing CPO's other than Sig Sauer.

To acquire a P226 9mm upper via x-change kit is prohibitively expensive, and there isn't really a market for used slides.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned getting a .40 and buying a 9mm CONVERSION barrel from one of the reputable after-market barrel makers. They generally work well and are a lot less expensive than some of the other options.

I've done it several times for SIGs, Glocks, and am running an EFK Firedragon 9mm barrel in one of my FNS-40s. (The FNS-40 conversion even runs 9mm ball ammo fine using the .40 mags, but hollowpoints seem to require a 9mm mag -- probably because the ragged opening of the hollowpoint round snags on the feed ramp.)

Other than GB, is anyplace offering great deals on LEO turn-in or milsurp 40 caliber pistols? I am trying to find one as a gift for a family member, but my budget is limited.
