Wouldn't you know it, but I've been searching for a 686 to carry at work, replacing my issued sidearm with a personal one. Found a 586 for $350 NIB, but the store owner was an ass (see different thread) and I decided to walk.

Went down to the club with a friend to break in his new Grock (very nice shooter) and saw a post about a student selling his 686-3 for a measily $290. That's right, $290!!!

The only problem, excepting that he's already sold it, is that I don't know what it would cost to have the 8" bbl replaced with a 4" so I can holster it. Would I be better off holding out for a shorter weapon or snag this one up as a great buy? Would replacing the barrel cost more than $200, incl bbl? Used 686's in this area are scarce, but new ones are going for five bills in the stores.

Or, would I be better off simply transitioning to my Colt 1991 and spending the money on training and ammo? I'm in a painful situation and could use the advise of my betters.

Personally, I would not buy a handgun (or anything
else) that I wasn't completely satisfied with. That
being said, I would let the long barrel 686 slide; if
you need a 4". The cost of the extra barrel
and the services of a qualified gunsmith might be
more than you are willing to pay!

Ammo cost and training with the Colt sounds like
the best alternative too me? :D :)

Patience...
Carry cash.

Learn and get good with your Colt.

One of these days you will see a nice 686 4" for $300...
Or a 586 4" for $200.

Then grab n run.

Given my druthers, would rather have a 586.

Brand new here in KY I can get a 686 in 2 1/2, 4 or 6 for $442. I got a 6 new in 1986 for $285 in the PRK but that's inflation for you.

You seem to favor a revolver so stick with it. Why not a K frame?
I have two Mod 66-2s. Real nice!

What type of s/autos would they allow you to carry? (just curious).
