Grassroots effort to gain tolerance.

I have an idea that I may try with some of my friends. Most of my city dwelling circle of friends is very adamantly for the abolishment of guns as "they are proven to be the leading cause of death in children" and other such nonsense (please note my sarcasm).

Many are of the assumption that they are death rays that are less predictable than a coked up Doberman.

I am considering putting out an open invitation to take out and shoot an AR (a nice plain Jane Daniel defense) and a 9mm M&P. I'll buy the ammo and the range time if they will submit to a safety briefing and putting some rounds down range on some paper, or if I can find some open land around Louisville, KY to shoot (no way I would take a lib to Knob Creek...).

I've done it before with my wife (former gun hater) and my buddy's wife (imagine a hottie with an opinion like Diane Feinstein) and now she is at the very least tolerant.

What say you all?

I understand the implications of people "knowing what I have" and all. This would be a semi-public invitation, likely made in person. Most know my ardent 2A support and ownership of firearms.

Don't you think familiarity will yield nothing more than reduced fear and improved perspective?

Would any of you do such a thing? I'm in a gun friendly state, but many folks in the city only see gun use only as a criminal activity.

Comments and thoughts will be appreciated.

In general, I think it's a grand idea. With that said, consider taking them out with some sort of .22 first. The low recoil and noise will make it less scary, and the lower cost of ammunition will let them shoot much longer if they enjoy it.

I think it's a good idea, and a good weapons choice for beginners. Louisville and Lexington may as well be on the moon, politically compared to the rest of Kentucky. I would volunteer my farms but they are so far from Louisville (2 hours or a bit more) that a range fee would likely be much cheaper in both time and money. Make sure they have adequate eye and ear protection. Getting deafened at an indoor range would be a less than pleasant experience on the first trip. I might recommend renting a 22 pistol to familiarize them with a handgun before putting them behind the 9.

I could see this as something that could go either way.
On one hand I would think that anyone who would agree to go shooting just might be open to change their views. On the other hand I could see the potential to only verify that you have EBGs that can spew death upon the masses!!! :D

Seriously though, it could be a really good way to educate the ignorant. I think the single biggest issue is putting responsibility where it belongs. On the person, not the object. That would certainly be something this could demonstrate.

I have a nice Ruger SR22 that would fit the bill.

I'll put a sure fire on it to make it seem more menacing until fired.

Yeah ... Cheat. Spring for one of the many .22LR AR-15/M4 look-alikes and let them play with that. Not that the .223 is a recoil bear, but the .22LR will have even less recoil, less muzzle blast ... and cost you a LOT less to shoot. Since you'll be supplying the ammo, if you treat just a few people to this invitation, the savings on ammo alone will go a long way toward paying for the new toy.
