I've posted on here before about my P1. I have now owned my P11 long enough that it deserves a review.
The Grand Power line-up is still new to the U.S, but seems to be gaining a LOT more traction now that Eagle Imports is at the helm. They are not new in Europe and seem to have been embraced for years now, especially in competitions ( they are bred for competition IMO, so no surprises there)
The P11 comes in between a Glock 26 and 19 in size. You may note that the barrel length is shorter and immediately say that the Glock has better measurements so the P11 is out. Do. Not. Do. That. ( You will see why later, but a special aside here: People have a tendency to build their requirements based on Glock measurements and then act surprised when the Glock has the most Glock-like measurements. Glocks are GREAT guns, but they haven't found a secret formula that everyone else should match. It is foolish to assume that you know the quality of a gun simply by comparing dimensions with a known brand. Diversity is a good thing for us)
The trigger on this gun is exactly as ever Grand Power I have shot....AMAZING!!!! This is a great carry gun for 1911 fans. The break is crisp with extremely little take up and the reset on mine might even be faster than my 1911....yeah, I know...that's a crazy fast reset! DA is also good, but I don't use it enough to act like I care.
The action is different in that it uses a rotating barrel. I don't even think about that anymore, because it functions just fine, so I don't think about it. Some say that this system reduces recoil. I'm not a physicist or even an engineer so I can't prove that. However, I can shoot this gun as fast as any I own and be in complete control. It is by far the smallest gun I can say that about. I haven't experienced any failures with this gun and I'm well upwards of 1000 rounds. Works for me.
The fit and finish is very nice. It is a solidly put together firearm. Reminds me of a USP because it feels like is over engineered if anything. The finish is very corrosion resistant so far. I CCW this and I sweat like crazy. No issues.
Takedown is different on the Mk12 vs. the Mk.7. I actually preferred the old system, because the newer system requires me to use my abdomen as a third hand and then hold my tongue the right way. I figured it out though and now it isn't a big deal. I have never uderstood the need to have a really fast takedown procedure. Is it nice? Yep. Is it needed? Not for any reason I can figure out.
The grip IS NOT configurable on this model like it is on all of the larger models. Mine is a perfect size anyway and allows me to get a very high and comfortable grip, which may contribute to the comfort in shooting as much as the rotating system does. It is a little on the slick side, but grip tape is a quick fix if you want more grip.
Controls are ALL ambidextrous. The safety is easy to use and doesn't function as a decocker (YAY! JMB would be happy and I am too!). The slide release is slightly sharp but works well. This particular gun doesn't autoforward like its big brothers have for me. I like the autoforwarding but don't need it.
The mags are 12 rounders and have a pinky extension that makes the gun fit just right in my hand. Watch your skin on those mag reloads though! I've gotten in competition mode a couple of times and left a skin deposit behind
The sights are perfect for CCW. The rear has rounded protective ears, which I thought I wouldn't like, but I love. Other sights are available, but these work fine.
Accuracy is somewhat shocking on this gun. I have several times taken challenges on shots from friends and other range goers. I have often found myself with my jaw dropped every bit as wide as theirs. I don't know if it's the gun or just the way it fits me particularly, but I can shoot as well with this gun as with any gun I own. If it had a longer sight radius, I could compete with the thing (hence the X-Calibur)
I've owned the P938, P2000sk, P99, and several other great CCW guns. This one is the best in my opinion.
