does any one how many grains of powder makes up a 1 lb container? I am trying to figure cost to shot on an average 30 gr charge.

7000 grains equals 1 pound.

That's 233.33 shots for a 30 grain charge. I go even further and then break it down into how many full cylinders I get out of a pound. For my 1860 Army with 30 grain charges that would be 38 cylinders to the pound!

That is 7000 grains WEIGHT to a pound. Remember that substitutes are measured by volume, not weight. a container which will hold 20 grains WEIGHT of black powder, will hold 20 grains VOLUME of substitute powder. That 20 grains VOLUME will not weigh 20 grains on a scale.

Generally speaking, you will get more shots per pound of substitute powder than from real black powder. Sometimes a significant number more, sometimes not enough more to make a dent in your wallet.
