Gp 100 ?

I am considering purchasing a handgun for my mother (as a gift - Christmas maybe) , as we have been shooting together some recently and she really seems to enjoy it.
She doesn't own a handgun now , but has several rifles and has been a shooter most all her life. She has been shooting my 357 (Colt King Cobra 6"(with .38 )) and .40 (Baby Eagle). She definately prefers the revolver.

Anyway , I do a little research and decide a GP 100 with 4" barrel would be the ticket. I also remember a friend of mine from long ago had one and really liked it. I know he let me shoot his before , but that was some time ago and I've forgotten any impressions I may have had.

So I go to the gun store and handle the GP 100 and now I'm not so sure.
The trigger didn't feel nearly as good as my Colt. Also the fit and finish were not as good. It was an attractive piece and it may shoot like a dream - I wouldn't know.

Anyway what do you all think? Am I just picking nits? I know the GP 100 has a good reputation. Should I look at a 686 maybe? Or should I start looking for a good used KC (since I know it's a gun she likes)?

This is my first post so hi everybody.

Look around some more

Howdy,

Try looking at more GP-100's. NIB, their triggers can be a bit stiff. Investigate the used market for S&W Model 10, 686(586 blued) or a used King Cobra. Good luck!

Your opinion means nothing to her hand which will be doing the shooting. Take her to the gun store and let her pick what she likes.

A good thorough cleaning generally helps Ruger's triggers tremendously. You can tell much by dryfiring it in the store. Take it home, disassemble it, clean the trigger thoroughly (soak in MPro 7, etc.), dry it out and lube it. It will make a big difference. A little dry-firing helps tremendouslly. It'll still be no King Cobra, but it will a lot more user-friendly.

Take her with you to a gun show. The prices normally suck, but you cant beat them for the ability to fondle and grope a wide variety of guns.

I would lean towards a nice, older Smith 66 or 19, or perhaps a Ruger Security or Speed Six. The Gp100 wouldnt even be a blip on the screen.

Hi stratos - what's best for the gift depends on your budget and whether you're willing to consider used vs new. If you are looking at the GP100 and the 686 price won't break the bank, then I would check it out. :) I just bought a 686 yesterday for a primary handgun after some fair amount of rentals, and I quite like it. :D

My daughter, when she finally moved out on her own, grabbed my two-inch pre-Model 10 with a square butt. She had the choice (with one or two exceptions) the pretty extensive at collection including medium-framed .357s and numerous autoloaders), and she had shot all of them. The only other one she considered was a SP101, but I wouldn't let her take both.

I got a great deal on a used 4" GP100 from an auction site about 9 months ago and I love it. I've seen alot of used GP100 police trade-ins at local stores and gun shows for a little more than I paid. I'm not sure about the trigger pull on new ones but from what I've read they need a bit of breaking in.
