GP-100 problem....

Lately my 4" stainless GP-100 has developed a problem with random light strikes. Primer strike is noticeably smaller than normal, cartridge doesn't fire. My old Service Six fires the same cartridge with no problem. It's the random part that has me really scratching my head. But it is getting more frequent. Transfer bar seems to be coming up normally, firing pin protrusion is normal when I check it. I haven't taken it apart yet. Thought I'd see if anyone had any experience with this before I tear into it.

Is it reloads?
Check your mainspring. It may simply be worn out,or the pin that holds that little metal plate at the bottom may have broken, taking tension off of the mainspring.
Have you changed ammo types?

I use my own reloads, they work fine. I've checked them in other guns without a hitch. The springs are all factory, this is the one gun I haven't messed with. The main spring looks normal. I will take it apart when I have the time to get into it. I was just hoping someone else had a similar experience and could shed a little light before I get into it.

Just a thought - is the cylinder free of gunk? It is possible that the rounds are not sitting flush - a scrub with the cleaning brush might help. Also, I assume that there is no residue or oil under the ejector star. Otherwise it looks like spring tension or maybe there is some obstruction when the hammer drops. Good Luck.

How many rounds through the GP?

I have set up a maintenance system for all my guns. After so many rounds (or if they start to act up) I replace springs (mainly) and also give it a good dunking in a cleaner.

If you call Ruger you may be able to get all replacement springs and firing pin for free. You may have to call a couple of times to get the right person (so far I've been really lucky) and they will send out replacement parts for free.

Just sounds like a weakened mainspring (I think I have that right, the terminology). Replace that and it should work. While you're in there, check out the firing pin and make sure it's okay.

On one of my old revolvers (C&R, fixed it and then sold it because I already had the year I wanted after a second buy), it was hitting lightly. I took out the mainspring and streched(sp) it abit and it worked. When I sold the pistol I told the new owner who got a replacement and hasn't had any trouble yet.
