GP-100 Front site, Fiber Optic or simple bright insert

I found both fiber optic and plastic insert front sites that I can drop into my KGP-141.. My first thought is that changing out just the front with a fiber optic may not be soo good, I'm sure the plastic insert sight will be fine with the white outline factory rear.

I did consider replacing both front and rear, but at least with the firesights they say the rear should be installed by a smith.. just don't want the hassle.

My goal is to get a brighter front sight for quicker acquisition, I'm not having any real specific problems but would just like better contrast between the front and rear.

thanks.

I've not see the fiber optic so I can't comment on it but I replaced the factory sight with a Millet that has a orange colored ramp. It shows up a lot better than the factory sight that I had painted orange.
Unless the fiber optic tube is well protected I'd be concerned about breakage. I've gone through a couple of them on my 870 Rem., doesn't take much to snap them in half.

Ah, that's another aspect I hadn't thought of.. the one I was looking at in the Brownell's catalog was fully supported at the front and rear only.

Heck, front sites are pretty cheap...perhaps I'll just get the millet.. can always have a few extra sights lying around ;-)

i replaced mine w\a yellow ruger insert(?box of 4?)

picks up quickly and has been on there over who knows how long..as long as i have it:D

being plastic and only a range gun:)

haven't tried a fiber as i find this works quite well 4 me.

just a couple of my thoughts.

I really like the factor front sight that's shaped like an aztec pyramid. the rear sight on this one is a Bowen and the trigger is down in the 4.5 pound range - 14 lb trapper main and 10 pound trigger return.

GP sights

I could be wrong but aren't the 4 colored sights replacement for the Redhawk sights? I know they fit the GP but as I recall the Redhawk sights are a bit taller. Did you have to file the sight down to work?

For quick pickup Express Sights (the old Ashley Outdoors) has a Big Dot with a replacement rear sight blade. See:

http://www.expresssights.com/handgun_sights.html

Currently, on my GP I have a bright orange Millett and it is far brighter than my other guns with sight inserts or paint as noted above. Millett also has them available in white.

Another thought, if the Redhawk sights will work on the GP then there is a gold bead front sight and vee replacement rear available.

Curious if anyone has tried these others.

Tom

i havent seen any Ruger Replacement sights for theGP 100 specifically. Haven't looked real hard either since the width and height of the factory sight as well as the profile suits me fine. Weigand does some pretty fancy replacement sights and probably has some options for the Ruger. He's an ace ruger smith and a member of the American Pistolsmith's Guild

I put a set of gold dot front, deep V rear Redhawk sights on my GP, used up most of the adjustment on the rear sight but did get them zeroed.
Took a pic to show the difference between the Millet & the factory sight, Millet is the one on the right

Got it from Ruger, part GBVR. It comes with a new front and a replacement blade for the rear.
It was good for pinpoint target shooting but I liked the origional post type better.

I'll mostly be doing IDPA with my GP, so perhaps just a millet front will help bring the front site 'to the foreground' for me...

Six Rugers, five Millett orange-ramp front blades (one running Ruger gold bead, just for testing).

Awesome, even for blind old me.

Gonna try the FireSight maybe........

I have two of them. One on a super black hawk and this one- they fit GPs too. Excellent sight 'though I find nothing wrong with the ruger originals.

Saw a package of GP sights at the dealers shop yesterday, can't remember if they were Ruger of aftermarket but they were made of nylon and came in different colors. Three or four to a package, didn't notice the price tag. Not sure if I would care for nylon but they were bright. These were the complete front sight blade, not inserts.

Interesting stuff.. Well after competing at a local IDPA match yesterday, perhaps I'll stick with the stock sights... 4 COF's, and only down 2 on one, all others down 0 with decent speed.... I think these just work ;-)
