Ashcroft was up 8-10 points in all the polls anyway, so this tragedy will have zero effect on the control of the Senate.

I think it's going to remain about 55-45 for the GOP come January when they are all sworn in. Each party is going to suffer a couple of losses of incumbents, and make a couple of gains with newly-elected senators.

That's how I see it, anyway.

If I'm not mistaken, mere death of a candiate in MO does not remove his name from the ballot. He can still be voted for and his seat filled by the Gov.

We had a similar thing in CA where a Sheriff passed away and folks casted their ballots in his favor. Afterwards, there was a special election to determine who should hold the office.

Do you know who this guy is??? Second Amendment Coalition of Missouri

Here is a quote from this site:

"Mel Carnahan... would rather have honest Missourians die at the hands of violent predatory criminals than to ever allow them the option of using a gun to preserve their lives or the lives of their families. Mel is a liberal elitist. He “needs” armed bodyguards, paid for by your tax dollars, to protect his life. But for eight years - his two full terms as governor - he pulled every dirty political trick in the book to prevent passage of the strictest CCW law in the nation.

Mel Carnahan led that campaign that lied to the legislature about concealed weapons laws…

Mel then abused the powers of the governor’s office to spread this campaign of lies to the people of the state of Missouri. Mel Carnahan, if elected, would join the ranks of other elitist, anti-second amendment senators such as Diane Feinstein [CA], Barbara Boxer [CA], Chucky Schumer [NY], and Dick Durbin [IL]. We cannot afford to put Mel Carnahan in the U.S. Senate. Your Second Amendment rights would not survive his first term. "

As far as I'm concerned, the dead only merit respect if they have earned it in life.

Mr. Carnahan failed miserably to earn my respect in life, so I'm certainly not going to engender some sort of phony respect for his memory now that he is gone.

Am I happy that he's dead? Nope. He left behind people who truly cared for him.

Am I happy that another lying SOB will never have a chance to do to the nation what he did to his state? You'd better believe it.
