Got the words out

Minus: It still ain't a Smith. ;)

Plus: It looks a bazillion times better sans the Gettysburg Address on the barrel. Congratulations!

(I had the same thing done to my former Bisley Vaquero. Amazing how a teeny bit of buffing can so completely alter the aesthetics, neh?)

Did it myself baby! It might still be only a Ruger, but it is now classic American iron compared to most of the market these days, incuding some truly hideous latter day Smiths. ;)

BTW, thanks for the compliment, far as it goes.

Hey, it's a Ford-Chevy thing. I'm sure some reader out there who collects Dead Horsies... er, Prancing Ponies... thinks we're both Philistines. ;) :D

How hard is it to remove?

Not hard at all. It just requires patience, some sanding equipment of your choice, and the willingness to try.

I have read of a guy who did it by hand but that it took a good long time.
DHart did it in minutes with a drum sander head on a Dremel.
I did mine with a B&D Mouse and finished it up with hand sanding. 180 grit and constant motion with the sander. 600 grit automotive wet/dry sandpaper on the hand finish.

Took about an hour total.

Ooohhh, nice. Gotta get that done.

Will probably punt it to the gunsmith -- but gotta get that done.

My SP101 is stainless, so it's ready for this treatment. But my GP100 is that Lipsey's "Target Gray" finish. I suspect the gray would get buffed off or messed up if I tried a manual-ectomy -- so that the only way the paragraph removal procedure would be cosmetically viable is to turn the gray gun into a shiny stainless gun, all over.

Thoughts?

I'd do the SP myself, just start slow until you get the hang of it. Though it is nice to have the billboard gone, I would leave the reading material on a TG Ruger where it is.

I am now on the hunt for a 3" blued GP-100. I will remove the billboard and send the revolver out for a master blueing.

Boats

I'm about to do my Ruger Service Six. Can the entire sanding job be done by hand??? After sanding, does the SS need to be treated...???

Oh yeah! Very nice job... :)

Can it be done entirely by hand? Yes, if you have the endurance for the boredom. A little power sanding never hurt anything using reasonable levels and grits.

Does the stainless need treating? No. Just buy the finishing grit of automotive sand paper you'd like. Generally speaking, higher grit equals shinier end finish.

Oh, and thanks.
