Got my TC testosterone enhancer finally....

Picked up my Contender from the FFL Friday, scored one with a .357 8 inch oct. barrel along with .223 14" bull, and 30/30 10" bull for $675. Then just won a another receiver tonight for $180 on gunbroker. Shot a friend of mine's about a month ago and decided I gotta get one.
Went to the range for 5 hours today and put 100 rounds through the .223 hitting oranges at 150 yds after I got the scope sighted (NC Star 4x32 Leupold mount). Also put 10 rounds through the 30/30 and that hurts need to change the grips, and the .357 Mag shot straight as hell at 50 with the iron sights.
Question's I have are:
1) Does anyone have a pic of a Harris bi-pod mount on a 14" bull. Thinking about putting one on the .223.

2) And does anyone have issues when your locked and loaded, and the hammer stops about 1/8 inch from the firing pin? Only happens with my
30/30. Somtimes it works but it seems not to be catching and doing a complete cocking fuction. Probably take the barrel to a gunsmith because it isn't the receiver.

It sounds like the barrel lock is not going to full lock and the safety lock out is not letting the hammer block fall out of the way. If it is only happening with the one barrel then it is the barrel and not the frame ( the safety is doing its job). Does hammer work correctly if you have an empty chamber? If so it is an ammo problem, or a chamber that is not in speck.

Thanks sheep, not real consistant, sometimes when no round is chambered the hammer falls all the way, and the same way when a round is chambered. I was using new Federal factory ammo. So from what you said just as I suspected its the barrel, is it fixable? Would hate to be out in the woods this season with a black bear or deer in the sights and this happens.

I have owned at least three generations of Contenders and have never seen this particualr problem. In fact, there are very few problems that one will ever present as the action is very simple. ..... :)

Throwing a SWAG at this, I'd have to question the ammo primers or hammer spring. Will the same shell fire after a second stike? Right now, I don't suspect the frame or barrel. ....

As far as the Harris, I have seen barrel mounts and the use of the forend stud. I don't care for any barrel mounts and currently have a forend mount on my Super-14 Rynite. ..... ;)

Please, please, get back to us on what you find as this one is reallly new to me and;

Pahoo, I really suspect the barrel is out of spec., since of the 3 barrels I have this is the only one it happens on. I will do some 30/30 handloads which should cross out its an ammo issue.

Jeepster,
Your guess is as good as mine and perhaps even better. I'm only saying that this is not a common problem, particular to the Contenders. Now, this is going to sound funny but I wish the problem was mine so I could run it down myself. As far as a gunsmith, why don't you just send it in to TC as the last time I looked, they have a lifetime warantee and not exclusive to original owner. TC are great folks to work with !! ..... :)

Be Safe !!!

After many years with TC's I'd have to go with Sheepman on this one ,Send the barrel to TC ,explain the problem ,they should take care of you.

That's not an unusual problem. Since it's not an ammo problem, then the locking lugs are just a little larger than the ones on your other barrels. The easiest fix is to stone the lugs, but stone the bottom side so you don't change the factory angle on the top side. It won't take much to fit the lugs, so run the stone over the lugs about 5 times, then check the fit.

Take one of the barrels that works ok, and mark the lugs with a marker. Open and close the barrel a few times, then see how much of the mark has rubbed off the lugs. That is how you want the problem lugs to fit. Just stone and check, then repeat if it's not a proper fit.

I have a Harris bipod on my 45/70. I use it with a sling on my Hunter model for freehand shooting deer. Holding one leg of the bipod with my left hand and pushing out on the sling with my right hand steadies my grip and aim for confident shots. I also use an Eotech.

I agree, this is usually caused by hand loads that do not fully chamber and don't let the barrel fully lock up. In this case where it happens with an empty chamber it has to be the barrel lugs.
