Well I was on my way to get a haircut and as I was rounding the corner to my garage I noticed a long box by my garage door... with the words "Adult Signature Required" on it.. great.. UPS Guy left my Romanian SKS in plain site next to my garage door.. .brilliant!

Anyhow I just got home from said haircut and opened it up.. glad I paid the $10 handpick fee, it looks ok for a good-very good rifle. First time ever I bought a used gun sight unseen... or any used gun for that matter.
The stock is a little loose, is that ok? Any way to tighten it? I am sure I will figure it out when I strip it for cleaning tonight. Also the gas tube is a little loose side to side as I can turn the upper wood piece left to right a little bit. Anyone else have an SKS that does this. Just wondering if it is excessive.

All numbers but the magazine match. Bayonet has a little rust on it, but it is just surface rust. The sights are kind funky, but simple. Feels good in my hands. I will have to tear it down and clean it tongight so I can go try it out tomorrow. Any
cleaning hints and tips would be appreciated. Overall seems like a good deal for $129.

Hi Wedge

I am also thinking of purchasing an SKS from SOG. Please continue to update and let me know how it fires. How did you have it shipped to your home? I am in Kali so I have to have it sent via FFL. Do you have an FFL.
That is madness with UPS

I also live in Cali... if you use an FFL you will have to pay tax, and pay the FFL his fee.. ads another $40-50 easily! Plus you have to DROS the thing and wait 10 days...

I have a C&R license and just had it shipped straight to my house. A C&R License allows you to buy guns 50 years old and older (and some others) without going through an FFL. $35 a year for the license. Go to the BATF site and download the forms, fill em out and mail em.. then wait.. and wait... took me 2 months to get mine.

Hey Wedge - actually the C&R license is a better deal than you indicated - it's only $30 for three years!

Happy buying!

Dear Wedge: Welcome to the wonderful world of SKS.
I shoot mine regularly at a 100 yd indoor range and really enjoy it. I'm sure you've read other posts about the SKS but wanted to make sure that you followed the most important rule of SKS ownership which is: Never Load An SKS Unless You're Ready To Fire It! That's because the firing pin in these beauties can become stuck and put you into a "slam fire" mode:aka accidental auto. When I got my SKS, it was immaculate and all original; at least until I took it all apart for it's initial cleaning. The original owner had not ever cleaned the firing pin block and while the pin still moved, it wouldn't have been long until it stuck. So, dissassemble the entire thing, clean it, and pay special attention to the pin and especially to the way it is placed into the block. You can easily reverse it or put it in upside down all of which will give you a slam fire. There are tons of internet sites about the SKS to help you figure this stuff out if you need it.

Other than that this gun is accurate and indestructible. It has a certain "bad boy" look to it, especially with the bayonet. It isn't pretty like an M1 by any means. It does what it does very well, however, and anything within 200 yards is history.

I found ammo for around .10 a round (amazing, isn't it?) and go through about 150 rounds each time I hit the range. About the sites: When I got the gun, after checking the pin I went to the range and found it to be extremely accurate. I then took the whole thing apart, cleaned it and refinished the stock, then went to the range and couldn't hit the side of a barn. Took three sessions to get the damn thing back but finally did. The iron sites are basic, to say the least. I did try the aftermarket peep site and that helped. Now that it shoots good again, I'll go with a scope. The scope mount allows for both scoped and iron site shooting.

I love this rifle. The range officer even asked me why I'm so enamored with it. He is more of a traditionalist. I told him it was simply fun to shoot. One interesting story I read about these rifles is hat they were stored in the basements of buildings in Hanoi by the Vietcong. When Hanoi fell, they were retrieved but it was found that the stocks had been eaten away by termites. The Vietcong simply wrapped their shirts around the back of the trigger and fired away! By the way, don't make the same mistake I made by telling people the fact that this gun was designed to be dragged through the mud and then pissed on to clean it off. Every time I bring the thing to the range, these guys all offer to clean my rifle for me when I'm done.

You get a curio and relics FFL by filling out two copies of the Form7CR. You send one to the ATF and one to the chief law enforcement officer in your area. The CLEO does not have to do anything.

It costs $30 for three years. Not only can you buy guns on a C&R list but a number of distributors give discounts on accessories.

Just bought an SKS, pick it up next week (Kalifornia law is stupid) can't wait!!!

I ordered a new synthetic stock, and a scope for it already!

Aside from the initial paperwork, what other paperwork needs to be kept, and does any have to go to the BATF?

I second the question. Do you have to keep records of every curio you buy a la an FFL? FFLs can be prosecuted for not having Form 4473 filled out.

Rick

For a C&R FFL, you must record all of your purchase and sale transactions in an approved format "bound book". These books (ledgers) are readily available at most gun shows or can be ordered through a number of vendors found in SGN.

I know a number of folks who have had their C&R FFLs for over 10 years and have NEVER been audited. Nonetheless, their records remain impecable, just in case.

Brownell's has bound books for two or three bucks. I sent my C&R application last May 9 and just got it this Saturday, mailed to me by a guy who received it along with his own and was nice enough to forward it on. Government efficiency in action.
