Got my new Kalashnikov

This past monday, one of the employees at the local shop, Freeman's Guns, showed me his Romanian AK in .223. Impressed by how well it's put together, plus the integral scope tappings, I decided I wanted one but in regular old 7.62x39mm. So, I ordered it.

Today, it came, 'cept they were out of Romanians, I was told, so the one I get was a Maadi Egyptian. Mr. Freeman, the owner, didn't charge me for it until I was satisfied with it an had examined it. And since it didn't come with a 30 round mag like the romanian would've, he gave me one for free.

The stock seems solid, although the upper forearm is a different color than the lower. The stock had a sling loop on the left side. Being left handed, this bugged me, so I removed it.

I'm pretty sure it's a stamped receiver, although from a reliability standpoint, it's hard to go wrong with the Kalashnikov. It's compact and handy. I'd like to get one of those boffo black synthetic stock sets for it, plus one of those ventilated steel upper handguards. I'd REALLY like to get one of those American walnut quality stocks, but those cost almost as much as this rifle did...

The rifle itself is new, although I can tell it's been in storage for a long while. I gave it a good cleaning and a light coat of oil. The nice thing is, I paid less for this one new in the box than I did for my first rifle, also a Maadi AK, used. :)

Anybody know where I can get quality AK accessories? sksman.com has rather steep prices. I already found a great place for cheap, new AK magazines: http://www.progressivearms.com Less than ten bucks for a brand new 30 round steel Bulgarian mag!
 
You've got to love AK's. I've had my VEPR II for about a month, and with a 30-rd mag, it just looks postively scary! I'll even venture to say they are more "evil-looking" than AR's, which I also enjoy. They are great weapons. I'd love to do some varmit shooting with it. I remember when I was a kid, for a short time my family lived in a crummy apartment complex, but at the time I thought it was really cool because out behind the building there was a trash pit where a bunch of rats were always running around. I used to go down there with other kids and try to pelt the little vermin with rocks. Every time I think of varmit shooting, my mind conjurs up that scene from about 30 years ago....Anyway, I digress - enjoy your AK.
 
Most everything you want can be found from K-VAR or Progressive. They have the stock sets you are looking for.That rifle has a thumbhole sporter stock right? If you go to the pistol grip set up, you will need to do the 7 US part switch to be compliant. K VAR is not the cheapest guys around, but they have good quality parts....

The label says it has US parts. What I dont' understand is howcome the romanian ones come with pistol grip stocks yet don't require US parts. That law is so stupid and confusing. Of course, I'll bet that that was the whole idea.
 
If you are talking about Romanian SAR rifles, they have enough US parts to qualify as "US-made" and hence can have a pistol grip (which is US-made itself) as well as 30-round mags (or drums for that matter).

I'm not certain, but you may want to check into the US parts count in that Egyptian AK of yours. It may have enough US parts to require US-made parts in the magazine you use the gun with.

I had a MAADI last year. It must have 8 or 9 US parts to pass the BATF import regs. They are very reliable blasters for econo AK's. The thing you want to watch is the front site...they can be terribly canted. Get a front site tool for about $5 and try to crank it where it's close. This ain't a match accuracy rifle, but it WILL go bang every time. They are tons of fun. Get some E. German 30/40 rd. mags and a case of 7.62 and you're all set.
