Got the .308 version (of course).Looking for suggestions on optics. I don't really want to buy a scope that cost more than the rifle but I really want a Leupold or ?. What to do. Any ideas people?
Thanks!
:)

Badger ordnance rings with picatinny mount will set you back a few hundred dollars. The quality though, IMO, is unmatched.

IOR Valdada supposedly has excellent optics at reasonable prices. I think there may be a product review at snipercountry.com

A site that has good prices on optics is SWFA.com. Check 'em out, you won't be disappointed.

What do you want to do with rifle?

If you are going to punch paper and nothing more get a Var X III with high magnification (6.5-20X or higher) The higher magnification definitely makes it easier to see holes at further distances.
If you want to have it as a Sniper Rig - get a fixed 10X scope with turret knobs and side adjustable objective. Leupold makes a number of excellent models. As well, I have read a great deal of excellent responses to the Tasco Super Sniper series which is only half the cost of Leupolds.
If you are going to hunt any sort of game (short of Gophers, ground hogs, and other tiny varmints) get a nice 3-9X power scope. This is plenty of scope for varmints (coyotes) up to deer and Elk.

My little black rifle

hello,
Here is the way i have my LTR setup .
its a 308 cal DM
Trigger Timney set@ 2 3/4 lbs.
Harris 6-9 bipod
Scope Leupold 3.5X10 40mm LR Tact M1 Luminous USMC mil-dot / Scope Smith Anti-Reflection Device with Butler Creek flip-up lens covers mounted with Badger Max 50 30mm Rings on a Leupold Mark 4 1-pc.
Sling Turner

before this setup i had MSP bases and a Tasco 10x42 SS with mark 4 rings, and it shot very good groups. i had no problems with the Tasco .
ck on Ebay and the AR 15 Board i saw a set of mark4 rings for 65.00 30mm though. at both sites .
if you handload drop me a email i can give you some good load data that you can try out . my LTR shoots a 7/16 group with Sierra 168 match .
you can also pick up a Leupold 4x14x50 w/mildots for around 400.00 on Snipercountry .with the warranty the Leupold has and for alittle more money go with the Leupolds even if you have to save up a little more dollars the time and your scope purchase will be worth it .
Good Luck and Good Shooting

Ive got the Leupold QRW rings and bases with a Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x40 Tactical on my 700P and I love it. They always return to zero and being able to remove the scope makes cleaning the gun less awkward (for me at least). These mounts are also quite cheap compared to others.

Good Luck

An IOR Valdada 2.5-10X42 tactical scope in a set of their hand finished H.D. rings and one of their 1 piece bases with a 20 minutes of incline.

The scope is rugged, has precise adjustments and optical quality that rivals Schmidt and Bender, Zeiss, etc.. Their rings and bases are top quality also. You will need the inclined base if you want to shoot much past 600 or 700 yds..

I think that scope is a perfect match for the LTR.

I have a Leupold VariX III MilDot Target knobs scope and Leupold Tactical tactical mounts and rings. I got them from SWFA in Texas

Grandpa,
I want to start loading for this also, I would appreciate if you share you 168hpbt load info.
Thanks

The good Sniper Col. (Norm Chandler) would recommend Badger Ordnance rings and base along with a Leupold 3.5 x 10 power mil-dot scope. Ducats & doubloons for his setup. With its narrower field of view, Leupold's Mark 4 No. 3 in 10X can be too much power, especially for police shootings.

Now, wanting to keep the LTR light & portable (& affordable), used (like NYRSCCA) Leupold 2 piece Quik Release ("sinner!") and a Tasco 10x42 ("cheapo sinner"). No bipod on mine and I've yet to get a nylon sling. We're going to the range on Wendesday.

Went to the range yesterday with my LTR. Grabbed a cardboard target backer and placed it on the ground for a shooting mat. Found an old tire and rested my rifle on it. Since it's a pistol range, the farthest I could go back was 50 yards. Decided to set up on the 25 yard line and just sight it in in anticipation of going to a regular rifle range at some future time. After dickering around with it with regular Win 150 grain bullets (hey, just wanted to print on paper), adjusted the scope & sighted it in with Remington 168 gr BTHP ammunition. At 25 yards, shot a 1 hole group (slightly larger than .30 cal). Well, it's looks promising at this point but I'll have to wait until I get to a rifle range.

My 700 VS.

I have 6" on you , but here is my set up. Remington 700 VS in .308 with Leupold 6.5-20x50mm 30mm tube Long Range Target with the adjustible side paralex (oh so nice). I had regular Leupold rings but needed to upgrade for 1000 yard shooting. I saved a little money on some really nice rings at The Sniper Country PX. They are IOR 30 mm heavy rings and a 20 MOA tapered base. So far they work great and that 20 MOA is very necessary for long range (maybe not as necessary with the LTR). I also added another item I got fairly cheap from the Sniper Country PX. A HS Precision PST 25 Tactical stock. Over all this is a very nice gun and I really like the Leupold scope. Having 20x like a spotting scope on your rifle is really nice when you need it. I know what my groups look like at 100 yards without having to walk out. And the IOR rings and base are a good cheaper alternate to Badger (from my understanding Badger Ordanance is as good as it gets, they may also be found at the Sniper Country PX).

Whatever you decide good luck.

Made the decision...

and I thank you all.
Being a relative newbie to the long range scene, and being as I probably won't be shooting much over 700 yds, I went with the Leupold model 52128. 3.5-10x40 M1, LR, Target Knobs, Side Focus, Mil-Dot. I've put this for now on the Leupold QRW base and rings. I may upgrade later but I think that this will get me started. Man, this is one nice scope. I'm really looking forward to getting out to the range with it.
Thanks again folks.:)
