Got my first shotgun. Need ammo advice

Well, I picked up my first shotgun yesterday. A Remington 870 Synthetic 18" express. I know a lot more about handguns than I do about shotguns, so I need some advice. I picked up some Winchester 00 buckshot that had the Law Enforcement (Advertisement?) logo on it. The guy at the shop recommended these as a good general defense ammunition. I'll will be using this mainly as a close range defense gun and a truck gun. I am not much of a hunter, so what would you all recommend as carry ammo? I can't wait to shoot it.

Hi Radiki
Is this gun primarily for HD? If so its hard to beat some 2 3/4 00buck .
For most hunting applications no6 and no4 will take most birds around .
Just get out there and enjoy your gun and practice .

It will be available for HD but my H&K USP will be closer (always wearing it) so it would be a SHTF second choice. I tend to find my self consistantly being in the middle of nowhere for one reason or another and have had a couple run ins with big furry 4-legged things but there could be some shady people running in those areas as well where I have no cell reception and help could be a while. My 870 will be joining me in those situations where I don't believe a 9mm will do much stopping. Does that make sense? On top of that I believe every good American should own at least one 12-guage :p :D
