Got me a new cannon. BOOM.

Handgun.
Large.
Ruger Super Redhawk.
.454 Casull.
BOOM.

I think this will make a helluva hunting handgun.

These ARE large revolvers.

But not as unwieldly as I thought they would be. With my big paws, it doesn't feel that large. I can point and shoot with one hand, and shoot double action and it's easy to stay on target.

Actually it feels like a nose heavy GP100.

I've heard some guys say that they hate the finish on the metal. I like it. It has a look to it that says "I am a serious tool". IT doesn't shine in sunlight either.

It's been a while since I've pulled a trigger on a DA Ruger. This one has a real nice trigger. It's surprisingly light in DA and very smooth all the way to the break. I'm not kidding, it's almost like a Smith trigger pull. SA is very nice and crisp. Whatever they are doing in Southport, they are doing it right with this baby.

The grips are fine for 45 Colt ammo, but for the BIG STUFF, they've got to go. The trigger guard brutalizes the back of the middle finger in recoil.

Maybe Hogues will solve this.....??

Accuracy seems fine. I didn't have a lot of time to "dial it in" though.

I can see myself hunting with this in the fall. Deer or Elk.

What factory ammo would anyone recommend?

For BOTH calibers.

I don't think .454 is needed for deer, but I'd like it for Elk.
In Washington, our deer can be large on the "east side", but all of the Elk are large.

Also, what would be a good way to carry it? I hate shoulder holsters and Cordura/Nylon.

Thanks

Tell us how accurate it is!:)

I have shot a .454 SRH, but it was so-so in accuracy, I need more time to practice with one. I am thinking of getting a .480, curious to know about accuracy for those who've gotten used to them.

I only shot about a dozen 45's and 3 .454's so far.
.454's first.......I know about the buildup from shooting a lot of 45 Colt ammo, and then shooting .454. It can cause excess pressure.

Recoil is stout. Like I said above, for .454 loads, the grips don't cut it. It's nothing to make a guy go running through the streets bawling, but it does make a 44 mag seem "light".

45 Colt cowboy ammo is pussycat material.

Got it in a trade, and only stopped at the range for a little while.

I kept them all in a decent group, maybe 2 or 3 inches at 50 feet, but it's a little to the left. Not using a rest, I thought I did OK.

I didn't have time to try sighting it in.
I hope to get up in the hills this weekend........

It's an attention getter, that's for sure. It the sight of it doesn't grab them, the blast and report sure will.

People expect it to be heavier than it feels. It isn't light, but the shape makes it look even heavier. It's "only" 53 ounces or so.

I like the sights on it, but I'd love to try a scope. I wonder what I should get? A Red Dot type, or a good optical scope?

Suggestions?

Right, but no one's gonna call you a nerd with that thing in your pants, I must say.

And here I thought you were saving up for a Korth :p

I have the Bull, 8" barrel. I use an Uncle Mikes #2 (I think), under the shoulder cross-draw for factory sights, bandolier style with a scope. You indicated these would not be on your list of preferences, but if you change your mind and need something in a pinch, they work.

That trigger guard problem is one reason I like the Bull, the porting takes ALL of that out of it. The S&W/Colt style swept back grip that Taurus uses probably helps too.

Are you loading for it or just shooting factory stuff? I highly recommend an inexpensive reloading setup, like a lee or used RCBS or something. It is actually a very good caliber to learn on. Treat it like a colt magnum at first and you'll start to find accurate loads and powders that do well.

I like Unique for light loads, 2400 for med-heavy loads. My favorite bullet is a cast 325gr with gas check, but for targets I use a 250gr plain base, both sized to .452 I'm going to see what I can come up with using Reloader 7 one of these days.

BFG THOUGHTS

Grips: the Hogues may be too thin along their backstrap; suggest Pachmayr Decelerators.

Ammo: Cor-Bon, Buffalo Bore, sumpin like that.
Or, just stick to 45 Colt (nah).

Carry: might contact the good folks at Milt Sparks to see if an HSR makes sense (my 7.5" Redhawk fits great - for a holster made for my 5.5"ers) and perfect for IPSC, too.
(HKS 45 Colt speedloaders work!)

Let us know?

One of the local establishments carries quite a nice selection of both 45 Colt and .454 Casull.

Prices for 50 45's are about what 20 .454's go for.

I doubt I'll get into handloading the 45 Colt. Maybe the Casull.

I've got a few boxes of 255 flatnose. They shoot well in my Hartford SAA. The SBH digests them with hardlay any thump.

I've often wondered.....what the heck IS the corecct pronunciation of "Casull"??

I'm not sure I'd call it beautiful, but is is very distinctive.

I can assure you, it IS a badass. I've got a bruise on my middle finger to prove it :) That was before I put the Hogues on it.

Before the rain settled in today, I had a chance to fire a few more rounds through it. The new grips are a vast improvement. I also used shooting gloves.

I stopped at the grocery store and bought a couple big blocks of ice. I should have set up my video camera. When the .454 hit the blocks at 30 feet, I could have made a Sno-Cone out of the remnants. For anybody looking for an impressive show, the ice blocks do the trick :D

Even with earplugs, it is LOUD. Recoil reminds me of 44 mag in a 3 inch gun.

I bailed when the rain got too heavy, and did not fire any more 45 Colt ammo.

I'm debating whether or not to put a scope on it. The factory sights are easy to pick up.

The second photo makes it look like a snubnose revolver, as if the barrel were chopped off right at the frame.

Now THERE's an interesting idea.. :D

I read a story on a thread somewhere....something like this.

A 454 Casull snubbie as a CCW? The scenario goes like this..
BG appears out of nowhere and you present your weapon..
he doesnt back off so...the worst happens. Had too..no other choice.
When the police get there...they ask "why is he still smoking?" You show them your gun and they all nod in understanding......"oh, ok!"
And if you happen to miss at close range? Local LE catches him later with your accurate and unique description of the perp.
In your court appearance the attorney asks you
"So Mr. Jones, what was so threatening about this smoking and naked man who had no hair left?"
You reply "He was dressed and had a knife at the time he approached me, I felt like my life was in real danger"
Att. "Well, where did his clothes and hair go and why was he smoking? He was naked and very disoriented at the time of his capture"
"I believe it was because the muzzle blast set his clothes on fire as they were ripped from his body by the escaping gasses!"
"The responding LEO's can vouch for me...I did not intentionally set fire to him :D"

:D :D :D :D :D Or something like that.

Shoot well
