In response to a question I asked:

"Thank you for your interest in Springfield pistols! All 2002 Springfield pistols, other than Mil Spec models, shipped from our factory after April 1, 2002, have an ambidextrous thumb safety installed at the factory.

Springfield high capacity models will accept the Para Ordnance magazines.

Well, it's about friggin' time ONE major, quality 1911 manufacturer realized that we lefties aren't, in fact, just a rumor.

I'm happy. :)

My Dad bought one of their new green 1911's and it has the standard safety. Does anyone know if they wil "retrofit" his gun. After all he's a lefty too.

The green one. Is that the Mil-Spec Operator model? If it's a Mil-Spec model then it won't have the safety.

Before I order, I'm going to have my dealer doublecheck, to ensure that the pistol I receive has an Ambi safety.

My Charles Daly came with a factory installed ambi-safety. The safety was one of the reasons I had considered it in the first place. Glad I did, saved myself a bunch of money.

MY Charles Daly, to date the only pistol I've ever owned, broke a guide rod after 400 rounds, and jammed the slide shut with a round in the chamber.

It would also jam on ball ammunition.

Now, it was an older pistol, and I"ve heard CD's quality has improved, but I'm not taking the chance.

Since we're on the subject of safety's, I have a ss loaded model with the oversize strong side safety. I don't like the oversize safety's. I much prefer a standard milspec style safety. Anyone want to trade?

Nightcrawler - I just looked at a new CD today at the gunshow...
Totally different pistol that the first ones i've seen a couple years ago. TOTALLY different. I MIGHT consider one if the price was reasonable. This one was priced under 400... very close.
Still, I wouldn't want to be the lab rat to test one. You guys let me know if the new ones are worth it.

George,

I have a pre-enhanced model Charles Daly 1911 that was built after they improved their quality (I'm told that the way to know if it was after the improvement is that the serial number has the "CD" prefix). I have 2000-2500 rounds through it now. I love it. It isn't perfect, but the few hiccups I've had have been relatively minor. It is very accurate. It has been reliable enough that I'd be confident enough in the gun to rely on it for self defense. It is a 1911 which means that there are plenty of aftermarket parts out there should I develop the bug to go and modify my gun and there are many smiths who are familiar with the design should it need work that I can't or won't do. And best of all it was significantly less money than any other 1911 that I have ever seen (except for one used Norinco that was about $50 less).
