Got a wazzit for you?

My Niece is asking me about the identity of this rifle. Very much Mauser or Springfield looking. except for what looks to me as a rather odd cocking piece on the back of the bolt. Supposedly a rare rifle. The short forearm, what looks like possibly express sights, and sling stud attached directly to the barrel looks European to me.
This is the only picture available, and no other information.

without any more closer pistures I am going to say that looks like the cocking piece on a swedish mauser. the blued bolts and parts would make it from a M41 mauser. is it 6.5x55 by chance?

well without anything else to go on that is my best guess. the swedish mausers have a cocking piece that looks very much like the cocking piece on the M95 mannlicher straight pulls.

Best I can do would be to pretend I glanced it walking through a show.

I'd do a double take on the slight guppy belly stock and magazine, the hollow knob on the bolt, the short English forearm, the swivels, and what looks to be a folding twilight front sight base.

From that one look, I would guess it is a .404 Cogswell & Harrison. Maybe a .375, but I lean .404.
Just cannot tell what is to the rear of the bolt. It could be a shroud extension for the safety that would allow scope use.
Who the H---! drilled and tapped the receiver to take (gulp! gulp! gag! swallow!) Weaver bases.

If she was willing to send the one pic (and is old enough to read, only the cell phone photo makes me ask- sorry): the gun SHOULD have markings. It is not home built.

I would not say English bolt guns (if it is) are rare, but they are very marketable, even having been D & T ed.

There's my guess,
JT

Definitely in a large or magnum calibre. The cocking piece extension could be a mounting piece for a peep sight.

As I said, no other information is available. It is some sort of contest from a facebook page from some tactical training group. This pic is It. I was also thinking large caliber as well.

.

The "thingie" on the rear of the bolt looks like the remains of a cocking piece peep sight, IMO.

Given the express sights, dropped magazine floorplate (extra capacity for large cartridges), and that bolt knob, I'd have to say it's a W.J.Jeffrey-made (England) .404 Jeffrey Sporting Rifle DGR, with the caveat that it could also be an older George Gibbs (below).

Thanks for explaining the situation Cheapshooter.

Write your niece back. Unless she is joining Star Fleet and the contest is called 'The Kenya-achi Maru', there should be both a
winner and an answer for the rest.

Let her know that a bunch of gun fools got a lot (of pride) riding on this one and have her pressure the pieholes for the particulars when the contest is over.

Me, I'm sticking with Cogswell and Harrison based on that bolt as well as a few other finer points that are harder to make out.

JT

P.S. Maybe have her check when the contest is over about what dollar figure they put on rare.

It was in a facebook post she shared with my nephew and me. She said later she thaught we might enjoy following the link, and giving It a try. So I did. Haven't seen any answer yet. Those with a correct answer will move on to a harder one to identify next. Not really my thing, but I'll let anyoue who wants to know It is on Funker Tactical's facebook page.
I'm sure what ever the top prize is there's a good chance that a TFL member can win It.
