Got a problem w/ M27

Just received a Smith 27-2 I got thru AuctionArms. It took me over a week to get to the FFL to pick it up, so I figure my 3-day inspection period expired. Problem is, it appears to need fixing. It's very difficult to cock the hammer or pull it thru, in DA. Upon close inspection ist clear that the hammer is dragging against the frame on right side (side opposite the cylinder latch). The hammer has had the case-hardening worn off below the spur, on the right side. The seller had to know this was a problem, IMHO. Problems being: PC crash has cost me my email msgs so I don't know how to contact the seller.

If it were fully functional, I'd really like this revolver. I could just grumble, and have a local smith fit the hammer properly I suppose. I'm not keen on sending it back to S&W, and I wouldn't bet the seller will cough up the $40 ro $50 it's gonna cost to put right.

Having read this, I guess this is more of a rant than a request for help, isn't it? Feel free to chime in and commiserate....

If it were mine, I would see this as a golden opportunity to send it in to the S&W Performance Center to have an action job done on it. And, I would tell them to diagnose the problem and install a new hammer. I pretty much do that anyway when I buy a new one.

I wonderful gun, let's start on page one

1) Get a can of carb cleaner.
2)Remove grips and sideplate.( Take screws out and turn gun so sideplate is faceing down over a soft surface.)
3)Tap the exposed gripframe on left side with rubber mallet. I use the handle of a wooden hammer SOMETIMES
4)Catch side plate...you may have to bang the crap out of it.
5)Spray cleaner ALL over the insides--> IN THE YARD ! Work the action while you do this. You''l have to press the rebound slide with your thumb as it will try to escape
6)let dry. Lube with Breakfree if you have it. Just a little on moving surfaces please.
7)Work the action again. Better ? MUCH BETTER ? WORSE ?
*If it's the same or WORSE someone may have to look at it for ya.

If it's much better then you need to order some shims from Brownells for the Hammer to be placed on the side that rubs against the frame.
+++I'm sure this isn't all to check but I type with 2 fingers and am
EXAUSTED ! ! ! !! ++++...........DEWEY

Hindsight.
Whether buying or selling. I keep a printed log of all phases of a transaction. That way I'm not puter dependant.

Hope it shapes up for you with minimal problems.

You could try running a search on AA and enter what you recall was the title of the post. Maybe it will show up, and you can e-mail the seller from there.

Make sure you have it search closed auctions, and make the date back before you bought it.

Also try M27, M27-2. Model 27 , etc....

I just ran a search and found quite a few ended auctions where Model 27's were sold. What is your username over there?

If it were mine, I'd strip it all the way down to the frame, clean everything within an inch of its life, and check all the parts. My first suspicion would be that some self-inflicted genius dropped a hammer from another gun into yours, but I've also seen guns so grossly neglected that problems of this sort arose.

If there's a mechanical problem, I'd contact the seller and give him an opportunity to make it right, and if he refused, I'd certainly say so in the feedback section of the Auction Arms site.

Personally, if the gun proved to need the services of a gunsmith, I'd go to someone operating out of his own shop rather than send it back to Smith & Wesson for two reasons: the company once did a mediocre job on a model 27-2 of mine, and it sold its soul to the Snopes Clinton-Liar Gore régime, and still hasn't repudiated its actions. I doubt a replacement hammer could be very expensive; fitting it exactly right, however, requires some effort and time. If the post it rides on is bent... Well, I've never encountered that problem.

Best of luck, eh?

If you have the auction # you should be able to do a search of the closed auctions.I also believe the 3 day inspection period starts when you pick up the firearm.

If you go over to www.browells.com you can pick up Ron Power hammer and (if needed) trigger shims. They are intended to help correct minor alignment problems.

No special tools needed, just pop off the sideplate and slip the shim over the stud.

Good Luck...

Joe

First of all, three-day inspection starts when you get it in your hands. I would notify seller of problem saying you will try easy fix but if it requires more you expect partial or full refund due to dishonest statements about condition (assuming he didn't mention this problem).

Good cleaning always first step. In 35 years of gun buying I have yet to buy a used gun that didn't need cleaning and a precision instrument like the M27 will falter when dirty. If problem persists let gunsmith examine.

I appreciate everyone's help. The auction was not one of the ones you listed, Cuerno, gracias anyway. I may poke around AA and see if I can scare up the auction ID. At this point, I think it's a trip to the local smith, and a nasty note to the seller, if/when I un-disremember who it was.

Editted to add:

I did succeed in sending the seller an email via AA. I'll let you know the outcome. Thanks again, amigos.

All you need to do is go to "manage my bids" on the AA homepage. Then click the closed bids icon and your auction will come back up. Contact the seller and discuss problem.
