Got a pre-ban Glock mag - need some help, fellas

Okay, I finally did it. I broke down and bought a brand new, NFML mag for my beloved Glock 19. The price was right (60$) and it came with a plastic Glock factory +2 extension installed.

Needless to say, I'm a cheap SOB. My wallet is still bruised from shelling out that much for a lousy mag (thanks so much Bill) but I figured that I shouldn't bet my life on the lousy Pro-Mag junk I had been using. It took me two weeks to decide on buying this mag, and now that I did -

I found out that this aggravating thing only holds 16 rounds. It supposed to hold 17 (15+2) but for some unknown reason I can't get the seventeenth round in. It burns me up to think I shelled out that much dough for a mag that doesn't work.

So what do you guys think? Is there any fixing it, or is it just because the spring is new? I have no experience with +2s, but aren't they supposed to work when used on a factory mag?

I'd appreciate any help you guys could give. I'm really kicking myself over this one.

Try loading the mag with 16rds that you can get in and let it sit for a few days ( it is probably because it is a brand new spring) :)

That's not the +2s fault, I don't think. It's pretty common for the last round in Glock mags to just barely go in or not all, but esp. with +2s, so just load up 16 and live with - it's about 5 times the number of rounds you'll probably ever need. What is strange to me is that this problem STILL prevails with lo-cap Clintonista mags with all that extra room.

I hate to be the one to rain on your parade, but if you are planing to use your weapon for self defense. Take the Plus 2 extension off and throw it away. It definitely compromises the reliability of your weapon. We had an Officer drop one of his mags in our day room and the bottom came off and the cartridges went all over the room. I will not let my Officers carry the Plus two extensions on their Glocks.

I really have to agree with 7... I wouldn't take ANY kind of modified magazine in a self-defense situation. I posted to you or some one else the other day who was thinking about a mag with the +2 extension. I said it was a bad idea... and that it devalued the magazine.

But I'm sure SOMEONE has had a good experience with them.

Okay, if I decide to take the +2 off (probably going to), how do I go about taking it off, since there's no detent button to press in? I REALLY don't want to mess up the little barbed tabs on the side of the mag. Also, can I replace the +2 with a floorplate from a post-ban mag? I've got two limited-cap magazines that came with the gun and I'd be glad to use a floorplate assembly from one of them if I can.

Thanks for all the help! Sorry if I'm seeming over-cautious, but this is the only factory pre-ban I've got and I'd hate to mess it up.

If there's no detent button, you must have the kind that just slips off - using each thumb, press firmly to slide the extension off, while pressing down slightly at the same time - should come right off - watch out for the spring.

Okay, I really don't know what kind of +2 I've got - it's plastic, has no detent button, and has the "big G" Glock logo with a +2 marking in a box below it.

And what's the best way to get the floorplate off my Clintonista (I like that) mags, since they have the detent button?

Will they interchange?

Don't know for sure about the interchanging but the Clintonista (or any other) Glock mags with the detent button can be taken off by using a small punch or some such object shoved into the hole of button, and prying off. Don't be afaid of hurting it, just punch it in and pry it off. I have heard of people using a vise or pliers to compress the sides etc., but no need, and you could damage the mags this way too.

THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE RIGHT JOB

I'll join the group backing 7th Fleet's advice; get rid of the +2 floorplate.
Not only can the magazine come apart on impact if dropped (no inner locking plate), but the magazine spring for your G19 mag was designed to work with a standard floorplate, so the extension can cause the spring to have insufficient strength to feed the last one or two rounds.

A few years ago, a young Deputy in our agency bought a bunch of aftermarket +2 floorplates for the G21 45 he uses on the STAR team, and he didn't believe me when I warned him about the problems a +2 can cause, until they happened to him. Now, this young man has just completed his first Glock Armorer's RE- certification course, and the othe day, I overheard him counselling another officer against using +2 floorplates.

Big Al, to correctly remove the floor plate of your NFML mag, you need to lightly squeeze the side of the mag near the floor plate and then slide the plate off. This will prevent wear on the plastic tabs. If you want you can get a standard floor plate at www.glockmeister.com or at www.glockworks.com.

If this is a new, unused mag, the others are correct- the magazine spring will need to be broken in. The followers where redesigned because the original follower had a problem of excessive wear where the slide stop rubbed. The result was that the slide wouldn't lock back on the last shot.
