Got a new Savage 10 package gun today

Got a Savage 10 package in 7mm-08. This is the wood stock with Accutrigger, Bushnell scope and leather sling.

I must say that for $468 I am very happy. The wood is Birch but very decent. The barrel is floated completely and the stock is even on both sides of the barrel channel. There are no imperfections in the checkering at all. The blued finish, while not up to $1000 rifle standards, is nice and even.

The only issue was that the scope was slightly loose. I fixed that easily.

Although I think the Accutrigger will take some getting used to, I am very happy. Kudos to Savage for putting out something the working man can afford without having to sacrifice QC checks and quality. I'll definitely be upgrading the scope sometime this year, most likely to a Leupold VX-1 or Redfield.

First rifle I've bought in a while that looks perfect right out of the box. Most guns these days look used from the get-go. :D

I have the Accutrigger on a rimfire Savage, I have had a lot worse triggers. Its not a competition trigger, but is a lot better than most low end triggers

Great rifle, in what is now my favorite caliber....
I just bought one Savage in 7-.08, and I'm going to rebarrel another (currently .308) to that as well. 7mm-.08 kicks .308 azz in every regard and is a great long range choice.

Let us know how it shoots.

I like the AccuTrigger, better than any other factory trigger I've used.

Does Savage use pillars in that wood stock? I've only seen the composite and newer AccuStocks with bedding blocks.

I've not disassembled it for a thorough cleaning but I am pretty sure the answer is no. I think it's only on the synthetic Accu-Stocks.

I'll have a shooting report next weekend.

It takes ONE shot to get use to that trigger. Hmmm, that rifle looks a lot like a 243 I know.(LOL)

Jim

You will be happy with it, for sure.

Getting used to a Savage...

Orion 6--Glad you're happy w/yr Savage 10. And thx for the pix of same--we all like pix! I have the Accutrigger in a Savage. As stated above, it takes some getting used to--You pull the false trigger about 3 feet, then all of a sudden the real trigger goes off when your finger just touches it!

HA! It took me about 5 shots to get used to it--IMHO, best factory trigger I've ever handled, by a country mile! (Well, except mebbe my double-set-trigger Steyr! Which cost 5x what the Savage costs.) You're just moving the false trigger out of the way, and when your finger contacts the real trigger, BE READY, you are IN business. 'Course, I grew up shooting rimfire target rifles, and am used to a sensitive trigger. But, I can't imagine anyone liking a rough trigger or one you have to haul on to fire.

Savage makes a quality weapon. They do not invest heavily in looks, but in performance.

If you like how it shoots as is, then leave it as is. If you want to improve its accuracy even further, consider glass-bedding the action, but only after thoroughly testing out the rifle as from the factory. If you REALLY don't like the stock, Boyd's makes excellent aftermarket stocks, which can also be glass bedded.

Again thx for the report, glad you're happy so far w/the Savage, and please keep us posted. We'll be needing a range report. :)

Congrats. Savage makes great, accurate guns. You'll be very happy for a very long time.

The scope and rings in the package are pretty poor though. I'd make replacing both of those as my top priority.

The scope will be replaced in short order. I can live with it for a few range sessions though.
