Got a new gun (1911)

Bought a 1911 yesterday. Springfield mil spec parkerized. I paid about $30 more buying it local rather than online so not too bad.

I even found ammo! $15 per box for aluminum and $21 a box for brass ammo.

Hoping to be able to shoot it in a few days.

I cleaned and oiled it and did not give it the "idiot mark" yet.

I do have the loaded coupon sheet from Springfield that came with the gun. After it is broken in I am looking to get some more mags, I am thinking the OEM ones would work.

Good times.

Is 100-150 rounds a typical break in before the gun should be reliable?

Reliability is in the eye of the beholder. I push a thousand for a carry weapon with assorted magazines and ammunition. Congrats on your new Springer. Bet it's nice. I'd probably like it even more if you posted a pic or two.:D You should be fine with the additional magazines and several aftermarket ones are good too. If you experience difficulty with the slide stop, the "notch" mod works great and is simple to do. Most I have seen aren't this "factory" looking but they do work just fine.

I am picky. I expect mine to function 100% all of the time, from the first shot until parts start wearing out. If they don't, it will take them a long time to convince me that they're reliable.

That is a great gun and a terrific platform should you get the bug for whistles and bells .
The Springfield Custom Shop does very nice work .

Had some issues shrinking the picture...

I cant really tell what that is a picture of that you posted.

X2^^^. Went with the Colt but certainly would have been happy with the Springfield. Congrats on that nice 1911.

Springfields sure have a great and growing reputation with some fairly knowledgeable people here and on other forums.

My experience mirrors theirs...a friend's was 100% for us on a recent trip to the farm range here and accuracy was adequate to the need...hovering around 3" at 25 yds for ball 230 gr PMC, WWB and Federal. We didn't work with any SD JHP's however...BTW the gun was new out of the box. Gotta say that the old parkerized finish still appeals to me...a year in Nam with one never out of reach endeared it to me!

If your looking for good, new US Gov't issued mags, try the CMP. Their order limit is 10 and all that I got recently were new, in the gov't wrapper. They worked well in my two Rugers, a Remington Rand WWll A1, a Colt Gold Cup and a Sig. .45 ACP of course.

For a range gun or a heavy carry piece you've made a good choice.

Do you get a "loaded" coupon with the Mil-Spec? You can usually get mags at a discount price.
The gun shouldn't really need "break-in", but the first 100-200 should definitely serve as an indicator of the reliability that you can expect.
I had a new gun that mis-fed twice in the first 200 rounds, and has been absolutely perfect over a couple of thousand rounds, since.
My Mil-Spec .38 Super had some weirdness in the barrel fit that caused functional problems, but that was evident immediately, and no further issues after it was corrected.
My last new Springfield, an RO, was perfect from the get-go.

Shot the fun for the first time. I like it :D

I could not shoot as much as I wanted because the range did not allow aluminum cased ammo.

But at 7 yards it will over lap shots (if I am doing things right). If I did not concentrate it was more of a 6 inch group. The trigger was nothing special.

No jamming or other issues. Good gun.

Trigger will get better as parts get worn in. Watch out for that idiot mark, it really hurts with a gun that good looking.:)

My Daughter recently inherited a Springfield TRP. I was very impressed with the quality fit and all the extras. I believe it has a match barrel with a bushing that was a close fit. It has the hollow hammer, full size guide rod, night sights. Plus magwell bevel and it has a Teflon coat that is real nice. The slide spring is more firm than my Colt 80 and the two stainless clip springs are heavy. The frame grip are knurled front and back., Even the front of the trigger guard is knurled. All that and yet nothing fancy. Springfield make quality in my book. Of corse It probably is worth $1000 more than my fine working Colt.

I found a new light in the 1911 world.

I have purchased lots of 1911's over the years. Even bought two Springfield's and had them both customized by my gunsmith. I gave one to my Deputy Sheriff son and I kept the other one. I have found over the years, after trying all different types of 1911 magazines, that Wilson Combat satisfy me the most. I now have a collection of about 80 or so of them, some of which sit in the guns while others are kept fully loaded and in my range bag so when I go to the range, I am not spending a lot of time reloading magazines.

Congratulations, Drummer101!

That's a good-lookin' pistol. (I always seem to go for the "old school" parkerized look.) Shoot it in good health.

I always liked the look of a used blued gun. My New Vaquero is also blued for that reason. Not sure I would ever choose to get stainless unless it was the only option (Smith 586, looking at you).

Today I was able to get 100 rounds for $32 (brass cased Federal).
