AP has released a list of candidates Gore is supposed to be considering. I looked them up at GOA, and it's UGLY:

-Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana.
[GOA rating NR]
-Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina.
[GOA rating NR]
-House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri.
[GOA rating F]
-Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.
[GOA rating F-]
-Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut.
[GOA rating F]
-Governor Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire. [GOA survey not returned}

I've spoken with Edwards once and written him a letter once (and received a form-letter reply many weeks later). My sense, based on some of his comments here in NC during the Senate campaign, is that he's mildly anti-gun for a Democrat but not an ideologue. Certainly that's no recommendation for him, but he could be much worse. For instance, he could be Feinstein.

Be that as it may, I don't think anyone here in NC believes Edwards will really be tapped for VP. And with The Evil Al Gore trailing Bush in overall support from women and losing ground to Nader in California, I still beleive, as I've been saying for months here, that Feinstein will be his running mate.

David, I hope you're right, and Algore selects Fineswine....

1) She'll have to resign her senate seat

2) The country isn't yet ready to elect a woman to executive office. Another 10 years perhaps, but not just yet.

3) Fineswine's "record" and background will be ripped up by the Repubs. And the rest of the country isn't as bleeding heart fascist-liberal as Kalifornica, so it might mean that her political career is over.

WOOOOHOOOOO!

You're right, Dennis -- it would be a victory for our nation and for California. Just as long at Gore loses... (Please, God, please.)

I know that evan bayh is apparently pro-life and they democrats are pissed because algore is thinking of picking him and the guy from florida, cant think of his name right now, pissed off the sierra club about some kind of airport close to some refuge. Nobody wants to get close to this gore kerry and gephardt told him to stay far far away.

I have some ideas on this issue. Gore has to do decide what political goal he wants to serve with this selection. He has to do one of the following.

1) Shore up the left, and marginalize Nader. Pick Gephardt (if he'll take it), and get more support from Labor as well.

2) Pick a popular pol in a battleground state that counts. Graham of Florida, maybe Durban of Illinois.

3) Pick a popular pol in a safe state (can you say John Kerry?) Stupid. Doesn't appeal to anyone not already in his camp. If he needs help to carry Mass, then he's politically dead anyway.

4) Pick a maverick pol who has been critical of the current admin, and who is not part of the Demo orthodoxy. Bob Kerry of Nebraska. This would give him some distance from the current occupant of 1600 PA Ave. Might work, runs the risk of looking less interesting than his Veep.

I guess 3) above. Comments?

Lieberman was critical of Clinton during the impeachment process, so he could defuse to some degree the stink that follows Gore. The talking heads are all excited that Kerry would mean a ticket with two Vietnam vets on it (ignoring the fact that by flying jets, Bush was in more danger than Gore ever was).

My favorite would be Maxine Waters. Her shrillness would drive folks to turn off the TV.

Agree that probably Kerry. Vet, smart, great speaker, known. Not known as liberal. Only problem: GOP Gov. He would be replaced with GOP senator.

Bob Kerry had Gore people do something to him during Primary. Not close or friendly.

Too liberal would be Lieberman, Harkin, Gephardt (pleasee ;-)) However,:
Lieberman- spoke against Clinton, but Gov is GOP
Harking-liberal, shores up base, somewhat mid-west, Gov is a Demo
Gephardt-liberal, doesn't want it, could hurt Demo's in the House

Edwards: Smart, young, unknown, small voting record to vet, southerner.

I put 'em in this order:

John Kerry
Harkin
Edwards

Note: Gore is making annoucement at Tenn War Memorial

Like the pundits said yesterday, we will probably have the info leaked by Sat/Sun. That way if reaction is bad, they can switch on Tues. Gives the Sunday shows time to hash it out.
