Googled? Good or bad?

OK, this IS NOT related to the other Google thread. I was discussing background investigations with a friend who is still in the business. A trend that some companies are using is to Google applicants. Blogs, parties with embarassing photos, hobbies and other information is gleaned concerning the applicants in order to aid in deciding which job applicants to interview. What do you think about that?

I guess it is fair game, legally. Ethically - same deal, IMO. If you've something to hide, don't post it on the 'net.

Personally, I don't worry about it. Try Googling David Miller in Ohio. :D

Basically, my friend was carping because companies are simply Googling instead of a thorough background check. Now, my thought, we recently had a TFL member terminated from his position and threatened with arrest I believe. Might the Security Director have Googled and found EVIL firearms and photos under the TFL members name? I am on a couple of home pages of FFLs, gun shops and one shooting range and a club. Good luck on finding much about me.

My name is not really common, but it is pretty common on google. The only problem (advantage) in that is that none of them are me!

Well, luckily, if you omit tellling them that you are, in fact, Sir William Wallace aka Braveheart, they won't find all your skeletons. If they ask on a questionnaire what screen names you go by, tell them MichaelMoore4Prez.

Well, nothing posted so far has suggested that they are Googling *instead* of conventional background checks. Anyway, I see nothing wrong with it. In fact, here in the 21st century, I would think it nearly negligent for someone charged with investigating someone's background not to do at least a cursory search engine check. It's so easy to do, there's just not much reason not to give it a quick try.

it's out there for the public eye, just be careful what you put up there. I personally try to never use my real name in a post. If you do google my name a certain author overshadows anything I could ever get to google.

Well, I am a professional football player, a professional photographer, and have taken top ten in national competitions, if you ask google. but only one of them is me :D

Edit: I'm also now a drag racer, a LEO, and a software author. But again, only one is me.

If they googled my name, and also see that I went to school in Florida, they would wonder why a rich man that owns a football team is doing interviewing for a low paid job :D.

No one knows my moniker on the net except those that are on them. Also, I had changed my name years ago (cut off my nose to spite my face type of thing :o and in the process of changing it back) so they may find that (wait, let me see):

With the name I use now, you will see an old 1953 chevy pickup that I once owned. Nothing else pertains to me.

With my old (real) name: Nothing pertains to me.

Real name but without the ending (kinda like sr. jr. etc..): I own a football team.

My moniker: You get a few hits but it would probably make their heads explode. Not only is "he" on the gun boards but the people at the democratic underground talk about him (or I should say website that I don't really own, but still, it would make them more  then anything else :D :D ).
