Hi fellas..new here, and a new gun owner. Just got a Kel-tec 2000 [not a handgun i know, but a 9mm] anyhow, like i said 1st gun i have owned. So what is a good ammo for home use. Keep in mind it cant be aluminium [kel-tec says no aluminium] and i am a bad shot, so maximum stopping/kill power per hit. Also, what is a cheap brand i can practice with....i know that this will be quite different form stopping power brand. TIA!!!!!

First it MUST go bang

For practice start at the bottom of the price ladder and work upward in cost until your personal performance goals are met.

For 'social' ammo test any modern-design hollowpoint load from Winchester, Federal, Remington, and Hornady.

Regardless of use, or choice, accept nothing less than utter reliability in function.

1) First it must go bang.

2) It must offer controllable accuracy.

3) Other stuff....

A> Try several brands of name brand premium SD ammo to see what your gun likes. If it doesn't feed well, it isn't any good in your gun. Personally, I happen to like the 124 gr +P Speer Gold Dots, but that's my preference and by no means is there any consensus on that being the best offering there is. There's several good offerings, your gun will tell you what you should use.

B> None of it is any good if you can't reliably hit what you are shooting at. Premium SD ammo does not make up for poor marksmanship. If you aren't hitting the "boiler room" at center of mass, or hitting the central nervous system, then no ammo is going to help. Only GOOD hits count.

C> Any of the premium SD loads can be said to be good "urban" ammo, and yet any of it will shoot right through any wall you are likely to find in a residential setting. Again, you MUST work on your marksmanship in order to keep your SD fire on target, in the BG.

D> For practice ammo, I'd just get the cheapest FMJ ammo I could find that's not aluminum or steel cased. The 100 round value pack stuff from Walmart (I usually use the Winchester White Box -- WWB) is good for practice, all of my 9mms eat it like candy. I've also had good results with the Monarch green box stuff from Academy -- it is good cheap range fodder as well.

BTW -- lotsa luck in your ammo hunt. Lately it's been slim pickings finding any 9mm ammo -- or any other pistol ammo, for that matter. Rifle ammo has been scarce, too. Political climate, ya' know. Thankfully for myself, I've got a fair size stockpile already, enough for now.

I use CCI Blazer Brass 115 gr FMJ for practice. It behaves and looks like premium ammo, but very inexpensive.

Winchester White Box is also good in the same specs.

For SD, I carry Federal Tactical HST 124 gr 9mm HP. Its very controllable, and you can find reasonable deals on line. Its marked LEO, but it is legal depending on your locale.

I have a Kel-tec SUB-2000 9mm and I use Federal 9BPLE 115gr +P+ HP's in all my 9mm for carry ammo, including my duty gun (get it from www.ammunitiontogo.com $19.95/box of 50). It is one of the most proven 9mm loads available with excellent performance in actual shootings. The longer barrel in your rifle should give you an extra 15% or so velocity and I have found my SUB-2000 to be very reliable and very accurate, with little recoil and muzzle blast. For practice I'd use the cheap Winchester white box 115gr ball ammo from Wal-mart, it's around $20.00 per 100rd box.
