A> Try several brands of name brand premium SD ammo to see what your gun likes. If it doesn't feed well, it isn't any good in your gun. Personally, I happen to like the 124 gr +P Speer Gold Dots, but that's my preference and by no means is there any consensus on that being the best offering there is. There's several good offerings, your gun will tell you what you should use.
B> None of it is any good if you can't reliably hit what you are shooting at. Premium SD ammo does not make up for poor marksmanship. If you aren't hitting the "boiler room" at center of mass, or hitting the central nervous system, then no ammo is going to help. Only GOOD hits count.
C> Any of the premium SD loads can be said to be good "urban" ammo, and yet any of it will shoot right through any wall you are likely to find in a residential setting. Again, you MUST work on your marksmanship in order to keep your SD fire on target, in the BG.
D> For practice ammo, I'd just get the cheapest FMJ ammo I could find that's not aluminum or steel cased. The 100 round value pack stuff from Walmart (I usually use the Winchester White Box -- WWB) is good for practice, all of my 9mms eat it like candy. I've also had good results with the Monarch green box stuff from Academy -- it is good cheap range fodder as well.
BTW -- lotsa luck in your ammo hunt. Lately it's been slim pickings finding any 9mm ammo -- or any other pistol ammo, for that matter. Rifle ammo has been scarce, too. Political climate, ya' know. Thankfully for myself, I've got a fair size stockpile already, enough for now.
