Good small caliber semi-auto

For home defense. Probably for my grandma. Whats a good small caliber semi-auto? Pretty much has to be a semi-auto, not to big, that she can handle(both gun size wise, and caliber)?

What is small caliber? Is that a .22 or a .380 or a 9mm?

Also, can she rack the slide of a semi-auto? If not, I'd suggest a Beretta .22, .25, .32 or .380 with the tip-up barrel. Taurus also makes a .22 and .25 with a tip up barrel, but I like the Berettas better.
