Good self-defense courses in NC.

I'm looking for a good self-defense class in or near the Winton-Salem area. I thought about Krav Maga but couldn't find a instructor near my area. The closest was in Gastonia & that's almost an hour away.

Any good suggestions on instructors, classes, styles, etc? I can't afford to go to any big courses like LFI or Gunsite so those are out.

Can't go wrong with Krav at all. If you can find a Hapkido place that's nearby, go for it. Like Krav, Hapkido isn't bound by the restraints of "rules".

Hey V,

Think "Internal Arts" very smooth, fluid.. Hapkido is a fairly young Korean art.
Do a few searches, hapkido is nearly perfect... (now Y'all can jump on me for that......)
I have been studying Hapkido off and on since 1999.
I've studied Karate and Tae Kwon Do, and done a little kickboxing, but I've been converted...

I live in the Triad too, I might be able to help you find someone to work out with. Depending on how far you live from High Point.

PM me sometime.

Anything is better than nothing, if there's a simple Karate joint nearby, why not?

Hapkido is a sort of unique martial art, it's hard to explain but overall it can be summed up nicely by the phrase "Be like water". In Hapkido if an attacker is coming at you to punch, you would grab his arm then roll or dive backwards, doubling the momentum, then twisting, releasing, and sending him on a nice sprained/fractured arm air vacation (aka the type of air tvacation where you can't catch yourself to soften the blow, you'd just land on your head/neck). Hapkido's main thing is to use someone's momentum against them to inflict damage, and thus, most of the moves and techniques are based around that philosphy of fighting. Unlike kickboxing and Brazillian Jitsu, they will teach you how to kill people. I had a lot of fun when I took classes, and I can't recomend it enough.

Then again, there is no "best" martial art/sport, and there's certainly no guarantees in any of it. But that's what guns are for :D

If you're not too serious about unarmed fighting, but want to know a few tricks, just buy a book off of amazon. "Kill or Get Killed" and/or "Get Tough" are more than enough to back up anyone's CQC abilities.

Hey V, sorry I didn't check this thread again till now.

Pm me and I'll give you a some contact info if you still need it.

KingofAttendance, spilled the beans on the "finishing" technics. Even the first five foundations of Hapkido taught include a finishing technic, although some very formal schools that a lot of children attend leave these out.
Funny for your handle, Hapkido can be considered an assassins art. The pre-emptive strike is a big part of Hapkido.

Here's a little philisophy that helps;

A block is a lock is a blow is a throw.......

I know this is an old thread ,but just for your information (if your still looking) V4Vendetta. The Gastonia Krav Maga school is opening a branch in North Charlotte so that would be a little closer to you then Gastonia. If you get the opportunity to train with Ryan Hoover or Jeff Jimmo from RHEK I would. They are a class act and their school has recently been named Regional Training Centers for Krav Maga and the Armory (BJJ training facility located in Florida)

If you don't find a Krav Maga school close by, the next best thing is Kung Fu. Look for a school that has combat applications. There are other enriching aspects, as well, including such cultural curiosities as Lion Dancing, and other artistic exercises. If you talk to the instructors, they can occasionally customize what they offer.
