Good rifle for Wife?

Looking to find a small cal that will not kick to much but is still a good rifle for varmit. I only have about $350 to spend. I was looking at a .17 cal, .22 cal. But I would like to be able to reload it also. Any ideas?

I'd go with .223 or .22-.250...
The .22-.250 has a bit more recoil, not bad, and it'll really push those smaller bullets.

I love the .223 caliber. Ammo is abundant, and cheap (if you want cheap), low recoil, and good ballistics.

Ditto on the Savage...

Don't know what she will be shooting, but I've found the 7-30 waters to be a great deer cartridge and recoil is minimal.
 
22 Hornet, maybe? The 223 is a good choice, but if you could find a well discounted 222 at a gunshow, that'd do just as well, except that the storebought ammo wouldn't be as cheap.

As for what rifle, most of the gun makers have compact bolt actions. And if you happen to find a rifle that doesn't have the right length of pull, if the rifle is a short action Ruger MkII I have just the stock for you. It's in perfect shape and leaning in the corner of my woodworking & reloading shop.
 
Thanks. But I am just looking for ideas. Of course I am going to have her pick it up and see how it fits and feels. She is not looking to hunt but wants to just go to the range and shoot. This is a big step for her. I hope she wants to go hunting with in a few years. Thanks again to all that have replied.
 
Bought my wife a 25-06 for groundhogs years ago and my daughters and grandson have all used it from varmits to deer.
 
For just punching paper, I would say a good 22 would be a great choice. If a rimfire is "not enough gun", she could step up to a 223 and still have access to cheap ammo.
