Well, the polls are saying that Bush is ahead of Gore by a significant amount. All the Washington Post article does is inject an academic opinion into the mix and spread doubt but it doesn't change the polls one tiny bit.
Gore is laying low right now and trying to formulate a strategy to beat Bush. He's behind in the polls and his strategy up to now, attack, attack, attack has him moving backwards. He's going to come out eventually and try to hammer Bush on abortion and Social Security. Bush had better be ready.
One of the best things Bush can do now is to gather moderate republicans around him and convey the image of moderacy (which I think he is anyway). Having Colin Powell appear in public with him didn't hurt a damn bit, since Powell, besides being almost universally respected, is pro-choice. He needs a lot more of that and a lot less of the Trent Lotts and Newt Gingrichs of the world if he wants any hope of attracting the moderate female and Independent vote that he'll need to win.
