Good price for a USED s&w 686?

At a local gun store I spotted two police trade-in 686's. I noticed a fair amount of holster wear. The cylinders seemed to be smooth and the sights were still tight. The clerk told me he'd put new grips on if I wanted. They had 4 inch barrels and were stainless steel. The asking prices were 290$ and 300$. Do you guys think this is a fair price?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

HS, I would say you got yourself a deal except I live in Massachusetts. No gun dealers want to transfer anything from other states. Bastards.(I'm not talking about the dealers)
Thanks anyway

I sold a stainless 686 w/ 4" barrell in excellent condition last year for $350.

Both the purchaser and I felt good about the deal. If they are in very good condition, under $300 should be fair.

Good Luck,

Dave

Go for it. Not long ago (before S&W's sellout) I paid $299+ tax for a like-new 686 w/ a 4 inch barrel, and it's a terrific revolver. You get a first-class 357 MAG, and won't be putting any money into S&W's pockets since it's used. Hard to beat that smooth S&W trigger.

I would'nt say these pistols are in VERY good condition. They have been carried for quite a few years. The holster wear is really evident. I am new to revolvers so I am not sure of what to look for as to what signs of wear to avoid. Any suggestions?
Thanks again

I think the price is good.
The holster wear on stainless steel is not an issue.
All I really look for is that the barrel and crown are good, cylinder turns smoothly and closes right. (Clear it) Then I cock it, let the trigger down and check for wiggle in the cylinder while still holding the trigger. The less it moves the better, however, expect it to move some.

I love mine, shoots great.
Too bad the turds betrayed us! Now I can only buy used S&W's. I won't give them any more of my cash!

In March, I picked up a 4" 686 that was on consignment for $250, complete with Pachmayrs. All it needed was a lot of cleaning, but I love it now.

I like it even more after seeing how many people will pay $300 for it. As that seems to be the market, I'd say go for it. You won't be disappointed.

Remember, Smith and Wessons are like real estate; they're not making any more ;)

Hey guys,
I have'nt posted anything for a while but this thread caught my eye. Last month I bought a nice used 6" 686 with the unfluted cylinder for $400 and am very happy with it. Shoots much better than I can!

jeepster,

Have you seen that thread, "How to buy a used revolver, you tell me!"?

I think it's on this forum somewhere, I've got a text version saved on my disk if you can't find it. Gives a nice checklist on what to look for, when looking!

Update: It's over at the GunSpot forum, sorry:

I bought my 686, 2.5 inch barrel with finger groove wood grips for $225.00 out the door at a Pawn Shop last Summer. The gun is mint.
