Good objects to shoot at with rimfire magnums.

I just got a savage 93r17, and had a blast with it at the range. Accuracy is insanity compared to my 10/22, and I'm loving the ballistics of it. I decided to put a D battery out and shoot that (yea I know, not great for the environment, but I needed targets and my mag-light was dead.) I was blown away not only to see the bullet go through it but completely disintegrate it.

What do you guys like to shoot with your .17hmr/.22wmr? Good plinking targets that you prefer to shoot at? At what ranges do you like to shoot at them?

I'm in the process of getting some old 20 oz co2 tanks for paintball guns. Going to remove the pressure and throw them out as a gong for a 150-200yd target.

I've heard sliced chalk works, but more effort than it would be worth to me.
 
How accurate are you?

Hot glue some generic asprins onto black construction paper......


This time of year we use clay pidgeons for rimfire targets. They disintegrate nicely when hit edge on.

In the summer, crab apples and over ripe vegetables (cucumbers and tomatoes) are free, environmentally friendly reactive targets.
 
Things i shot at with .22s:

A broken PS3
Old mobile phones (the big ones)
Little ice sculptures that i made myself
Old PCs
ALL kinds of cans
old speakers
a furby
....

Electric devices are a lot of fun to shoot at, but theyll leave a huge mess after a few dozen rounds. a good idea is to put an old blanket under the things you wanna shoot at, that makes cleaning a lot more easy.
 
empty pop cans, filled with water ( or old water bottles refilled ) explode nicely & are cheap, & still recyclable after shooting... ( a drop of food color in the water can make red or green mist ;) ) I'm usually at 100 yards with 22 lr, & 150 - 200 yards with WFM
 
After I started making single hole groups with my .17 hmr from 75 yards I started to shoot the symbols off playing cards. Cheap targets with a lot of bullseyes to shoot out.

Squirrels at any distance I can see them.

Golf balls at 100-150 yards

Get a piece of wood and some thumbtacks, stick thumbtacks into wood, and shoot them. Driving tacks.
 
Live horseflies/houseflies and yellow jackets on target paper at 25, 50 and 100 yards. I like to see the resulting bug splatter on the target paper.

A small wire hanged Necco wafer, with a small Dremmel drilled hole in it.

Paintballs pierced with toothpicks and perched on top of target frames.
Swinging golf and tennis balls
Pinecones thrown-up on the backstop dirt berm {you can really make them dance}.
Tannerite in pumpkins!!!

Food --- apples, gourds, watermelons, etc etc
Metal 22 spinner targets at 100 - 200 yards.

An edge-on Ace playing card.

Sticks...dirt clods on the backstop.

A radio controlled 4 wheel robot toy, with a small vertical wooden dowel stuck in the top of the toy; with a paper plate perched on top.

My latest invention: A small {12" long} 1/32" diameter thin straight wire used for survey reference flags; that you can buy at Home Depot --- that have a small orange plastic flag on top. Bend over the top 3 inches of the wire flag and slide a shotgun shell hull, or any kind of spent brass over the top bent wire; and push the bottom of the wire into the dirt backstop. Shoot at your enjoyment.

Shotgun clays work well for me. Ping pong balls glued to golf tees work well also. Bic lighters that ran out of fuel. I used to shot burned out light bulbs in a trash pit at my grandparents house. I did not have to worry about glass. When the pit was full grampa burned what would bun, then covered it over with dirt. (I also used to shoot field rats in that same pit as well.)
 
Good reactive targets:
Beer (buy the worthless stuff like Natural Light)
Cheap canned soft drinks
Water bottles
Potatoes (nice 'chunkage')
Eggs (minor splatter)
Water-filled vegetables and fruits (melons, green peppers, etc)

More challenging targets:
Grapes
Cherry tomatoes
Coins
M&Ms/Skittles

Please don't do that. The electronics and batteries contain some seriously toxic compounds. :( They may not hurt people, but they really mess up small mammals and, especially, fish.
 
Oh, yeah .... every Easter we have an Easter Egg Hunt..... the extended family gets together the weekend before and dyes eggs ......all the kids do a dozen each, which adds up to way more egg salad than anyone wants to eat..... so we take about 12 dozen out and shoot them with .22's .......
 
On my range for such, I like to put some food coloring or koolaide in the ice tray and make colored ice targets.

Fun to shoot and leaves a nice clean range, no mess, no fuss.
 
Not a WMR or an HMR, but I once talked to a guy with an Anschutz .22LR. He said he would spread some honey on a piece of plywood, wait for flies to gather, and shoot the flies.
 
targets

For sweet visual's:
sun warmed shaving cream cans.. leave them in the sun for about an hour, even winger gets a spin and spew.
travel size baby powder.. you have to cut the sifter top off first, but ohh the cloud you get.
expired packs of bologna from the grocery store
cans of vienna sausage
potatoes
eggs
tannerite on anything

For experiments:
Tape the edges of a good thick phone book and shoot with various ball and grain weight. then remove the tape and check out the expansion/cavitation of the various styles of ammo the deeper they go through the pages.

For challenges:
cotton swabs in a drilled 2x4 at about 30 yds
aspirins on black paper
20 yd pistol targets at 100 yds for rifle shooting
cd's hanging on fishline and let swing in the breeze
cd's glued to black paper at 30yds.. shoot through the center hole without touching plastic
matches in a drilled 2x4
