U.S. Is Said to Fail in Tracking Arms for Iraqis

The American military has not properly tracked hundreds of thousands of weapons intended for Iraqi security forces and has failed to provide spare parts, maintenance personnel or even repair manuals for most of the weapons given to the Iraqis, a federal report released Sunday has concluded.

The report was undertaken at the request of Senator John W. Warner, the Virginia Republican who is the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and who recently expressed an assessment far darker than the Bush administration’s on the situation in Iraq.

Is it just me or is this completely unlike anything that's ever happened before? I'm trying to imagine the Roman Legion not keeping track of swords or English Colonial troops accidentally handing over a few million muskets to revolutionaries. What the heck? How many of these do you suppose will be used against our friends & loved ones? Bad form...
 
Yeah, according to CNN's story, 14,030 weapons were lost.

Missing from the Defense Department's inventory books were 13,180 semiautomatic pistols, 751 assault rifles and 99 machine guns.


Can almost see a corrupt Iraqi Army commander: Whoops..the tailgate just happened to be down and those crates accidentally fell out...right in front of those insurgents! Help...Help...

Well, the semiauto pistols were probably Glocks rather than 1911s or M9s if that makes a difference.

I once saw an article in the NYTimes talking about how the population of Iraq was arming themselves - they spotlighted a middle aged woman who was toting a G19 - probably fell of the back of the truck.

We will find the guns after we find the WMDs. :barf:

I much prefer good news. Unfortunately, there aint much good news coming out Iraq. Yeah, we are killing a lot of BGs, but not accomplishing much else.
