Dear Shooters:
You're all aware of my response to "DRILLED CHAMBER" post!
I was wrong; I want to state that to be honest men we need to admit our mistakes! What is wrong with being wrong every now and then? Plenty!
Even though I felt quesy about my advice - it was wrong and a slip-shod way of saving an old gun barrel!! :D . We seem to always want to offer intelligent ways of solving every problem as cheaply as we can, yet that is not quality gunsmithing! And, when we make a mistake we ought to be totally transparent abouit our mistake! That's how we learn!
When I was young, I went to Mr. Shaners shop and asked for some drill-rod! He was a crusty old fart, but a fine smith! He said, "What size?" I said, oh! over a sixteenth." He said, "how bout 3/16 ?" I said O.K.." He said, "what size is that?" I stood there for five minutes, the sweat running down the crack God supplied me with and had NO idea that it was.1875! Taught me a good lesson - I'VE NEVER FORGOTTEN THAT DECIMAL!!! :D  :o

Good Gunsmithing

Good post Harry. I had folks climb all over me for saying I have a Mod 60 with a 1 7/8" bbl, but it's sitting right in fromt of me.

The same principle applies to all aspects of out lives. It might even help with the contrary party the next time something comes up. If you can admit a mistake to yourself you should be able to admit it to another concerned party.

Even more Respect

Mr Bonar, I have grown to respect you over the last few months very much. You seem to be one of the "good guys" to me from reading your previous posts. The fact that you feel like you made a mistake and came here and said so prooves me correct in my assumption of you. I have messed up more than my share of times when it comes to life and our dealings with other folk and I try to be as honest as you have been each and every time, thanks for the great example.

I like Harry a lot. He is a very nice man and although we differ sometimes in our methods, I respect him and his input on this Forum.

I closed down to the general public for various reasons, and I have never regretted it for one moment. I have a program of living that requires Rigorus Honesty and when I am wrong, I admit it and try to make right what I did worng. This is the way that real men work and live. If any of you see this as a sign of weakness, then I feel sorry for you. I know some Moderators do not like apologies, but that remains their problem not mine. Harry, like myself , is a real person, not an imaginary one like most folks on forums. We use our real names and make no bones about it. Our words of iron have meaning because we are real people.
Thanks for this post , Harry. You are a good man!

Harry,

You are an upstanding and honest gentleman. I approve of the honorable man and you are a fine example.

It is a rare quality nowadays when most everything that happens is given the excuse "its not my fault, I was abused as a child" when someone has a lapse in judgement.

Kudos to you sir...

Mike

Harry,
I have no problem at all with an honest mistake. I sure make a lot more than my share. The guy I really worry about is the guy who is giving gunsmithing advice and KNOWS that he doesn't know what he is talking about. You, Dave Sample and Jim Keenan are just three of the "pros" that I look to for advice. I'm an amateur trying to learn gunsmithing as a hobby. I'll take your advice, and Dave's and Jim's, any day, even if I have to pay for it. In other words, I'll put my money where my mouth is. I trust your opinions, and your occasional mistake doesn't worry me in the slightest. Please keep giving us amateurs your advice.

Thanks. I am not an expert on anything. I am still learning about things and I have never claimed to be anything I am not. I am not a "Gunsmith" and I am often accused of that. I know very little about newer types of handguns and do not comment abouit them, nor do I offer opinions about guns I don't know much about. I am getting old and make mistakes in posts and misplace words, etc. but try to correct what I mis-spoke when I can. I do not try to offer advice on what people should spend their money on relative to handgun or long gun selection. All I know is what experience has taught me, not hearsay. The Dealers in Prescott know that I do not sell guns and try to compete with them. I do not care for most gunstores or the folks that work in them because of the way they treat people who walk through their door. They act as if we are ruining their day by showing up and are "self pronounced Experts" who will say anything to sell what they peddle.

I do know some things about the guns I have worked on and like Harry, I like to share that information with interested parties. There is the right way, the wrong way, and my way. Take your pick! My opinions are just that. Opinions. They are not cast in bronze or carved in a rock. You may have a different one and I like that because that is how I learn new things. Show me a better way and I will use it.
