Good Deer Signs

Went out behind the house about 50 yards. Weeds about chest high. Heard a noise turned, there were 2 does stairing me down. Soon came the snort and run. Every year we have a doe drop a little one out back. So I assume there is at least one back there. I didnt tromp around, I left the area. Got the four wheeler out. Headed for the creek in the other direction, about 1/4 mile from the house. Parked the four wheeler, heard a splash. Turned and there was a spotted fawn could not have been 18"-24". It jumped in the creeek and crossed away from me. It got out the other side and wondered off in the weeds. I love getting up at day break and roaming around. Never know what you may see.

Good Deer signs?

Here in this part of Iowa and for the most part the whole state we are over run with the antlered rats.Last year we had 44,000 car deer accidents which resulted in 9 human deaths,The estimated damage done to crops is around 16,000,000 dollars.Every year I help 1 of my neigbors with his 1st crop of hay and in the past few years with out fail we run a fawn or 2 through the bailer.Last year Iowa hunters took over 160,000 deer and the DNR says the herd will increase by 250,000 a net increase of 90,000.IMHO the answer to this is a Doe to get a Buck and a Doe only season because if something isn't done soon(this year) we are headed for a major die off(CWD,starvation)It is not unusal to see does with twin or triplet fawns and as most White tail hunters know that is not a good sign.Sorry for the rant but I love to hunt deer and the wrong headed thinking of our state DNR is putting my favorite fall and winter past times in jepardy ELMOUSMC

If you guys get over run with them let me know, I'd be glad to come up there and help you control the population.

Everyone that hunts with us, take does. All the kids are told to take a doe every chance they get. If we have no one needing meat, then it goes in my freezer. We eat it all year long:). In fact we have had a lot more does where we hunt than does. So we try to do our share. Plus the kids can shoot 7 does I think. That is if they are under 17 and buy the youth license. 1 $7.50 license gives them all their deer tags. Got to luv Indiana DNR{sometimes):D

Good Deer Signs

I prefer, "deer this way" (with arrow).

Or, "over here, you dimwit" (again, with arrow).

I always seem to get the one that says, "you're making to much noise. Good luck."

:D

ELMOUSMC It must be crowded there right now in the 2 acres left above water. :D

Within the last year here in the deep south I had a total of 3 deer incidents. I managed to dodge one which ran in front of the truck and one which was trying to hit the back wheel. The third one was a hit, a scrawny little thing barely wearing its first brown coat, which impacted the truck on the right door. Lucky for me s/he was very small and I was only going about 10 MPH so we just had a scuff instead of a dent. And last year was a bad one for the deer herd, with the drought and the blue tongue disease thinning them down considerably. :(

Glug,gurgle

Where I live we didn't have the prolonged flooding,But we did have almost 8 inches of rain in just under an hour. The flash flooding and crop damaged fields for the most part put an end to any thoughts of Pheasant and Quail hunting this fall and from what I am hearing the the turkey and deer got hit pretty hard in this area also.ELMOUSMC:(

Being ignorant of the problems with flooding in Iowa and other places, and only knowing what we have heard on the news, here in Oklahoma, I would think that if the crop damage on corn and wheat is as bad as we have been led to believe, this will have a profound effect on the wildlife such as deer and turkey and others in the next few months. You may not have an over population of these animals before to long.

Here in Southern Indiana, crops had a late start. But they are looking ok. Right now the deer are in eating blackberries (50 yards) out my back door:D
We did not get all the water they got up North. Maybe there deer will come this way.
