Good Deals on Lyman Muzzleloaders

I am not associated with Third Generation in any way other than as a happy customer; I bought a .50 caliber Lyman Trade Rifle flintlock some time ago and couldn't be happier with it. I just contacted them to see if they planned to get in any more .54 flintlock Great Plains Rifles and received the following reply:

No, we are no longer carrying Lyman muzzleloaders. What we have right now is all we will ever have.

Thank you,

Third Generation Shooting Supply Co.

If you're looking for a Lyman, they have excellent prices on their remaining stock, and only $4.95 shipping on any order. I found what I was looking for elsewhere (also on sale), but thought I should forward the link to any others looking for a good deal on a frontstuffer. Here's the link to their remaining inventory. Check out the $305 delivered on a number of different Trade Rifles! Wow!

Legionnaire, I know absolutely nothing about black powder long guns. Is Lyman a good brand? Also, what is the difference between a "trade rifle" and a "great plains" rifle and why is one cheaper than the other?

I've always toyed with the idea of getting a muzzleloading rifle but am completely ignorant. I can't even decide if I'd want a percussion or flintlock although the flintlock seems kinda cool to me!

Sorry if I sound like a salesman; I'm not. Lyman muzzleloaders are known as good quality starter guns. There are cheaper and far more expensive guns out there. I'm still relatively new to black powder rifles, but the Lymans came highly recommended as a great place to start. After doing the research, I concluded that I didn't want anything cheaper. And I have been very satisfied with the quality thus far.

Trade Rifles have shorter barrels and faster rate of twist: 1:48 I believe. That's a compromise twist rate that should shoot patched round balls, conicals, and modern sabots fairly well--just have to play with the loads to see what the gun likes best. The Great Plains Rifles have 32-inch 1:60 twist barrels, so they are mostly a patched round ball proposition. The Great Plains Hunter has the longer barrel, but with a fast 1:32 twist for modern projectiles.

Your call on flintlock versus percussion. I like my flintlock Trade Rifle just fine, and am still experimenting to find out what load it likes best. I plan to hunt with these rifles, and in PA's late muzzleloading season, it's flintlocks only, so percussion was out for me. If one were just looking for a range gun, percussion might be the better option unless you are into the tradition of the flintlock; they can be finicky. Nevertheless, I like the flintlock a lot.

Great guns and good pricing !!

Is Lyman a good brand?
Lyman is and excellent brand of side-cockers. I have owned most of the traditional models. Currently my go-to on deer hunting, is the Deerstalker in SS. There are many differences between the Trade and the GPH. Too many to go into but just look them over. The trade is or shouid be the least expensive and lots of brass hardwear where the where the GPH is more in keeping with the spirit of the Hawkens. Go to the lyman website and compare. ... :)

Be Safe !!!

Thanks guys, your info helps me a lot. Don't know if I'll actually buy a rifle but they do intrigue me. I only have so much available gun money and I've got my eye on several revolvers as well. Choices, choices!!! Thanks again.
