Good cheek rest for a scoped M1A/M14?

Thinking of scoping, small scope mounted as low as possible with low rings on an arms mount (have mount, waiting on scope). But I WILL need some lift - I mounted a scope temporariliy and saw that.

The gun is black fiberglass - I'd prefer black/dark colors.

There's the eagle stock pack at http://dillonprecision.com/template/p.cfm?maj=58&min=1&dyn=1& - it looks VERY cool; but does it elevate the cheek much? (I'm not too knowledgeable about these things.)

There's one at fulton armory that's leather and comes with various lifts. How stable/solid are these? They look wobbly, and look like big tumors or something.

Anyone have any experience with the above or thoughts?

Any other suggested cheek adjustments worth considering?

thanks,
Battler.

I had a few of the Eagle Stock Packs a few years back. Though I would need them for when I scoped my ARs. I didn't and I gave them away. IIRC they should raise your cheek approx .25" to .50".

Don't know if this will be enough. Oh the people I gave them to put them on their rifle and haven't taken them off.

Battler: An expedient solution which can look just as nice as factory gear (if done neatly) is to make your own out of plastic foam (open or closed cell ensolite, styrofoam, etc.) This was a trick that used to be taught to Army snipers using M21/M14 weapons. Cut a small chunk of foam into the desired width, height, and length. Place on top of stock (temporarily hold in place w/ small strips of duct tape). If need be, build up your cheekpiece in layers. Once you have the proper position for eye-relief and "spot weld", finish the job by strapping the foam down using full swathes of tactically colored (OD green, black, etc.) duct tape. Press the tape over the foam, mating it to all flat surfaces and then over and around the rifle stock. The key is to get good adhesion to the cut foam and use full length strips which go completely around the buttstock. Use narrow strips to dress up the corners and ends. This was a normal procedure for all sniper students back in the 70's and 80's. You must, of course, have the scope mounted before installing the cheekpad. The entire procedure takes about 15-30 minutes. The end result is a relatively bomb-proof custom fit cheekpad that wears well in the field. If you do it carefully, people will think it came from the factory. Neatness counts! Don't forget the blunt-nosed safety scissors (as opposed to ripping the duct tape with your teeth)! :) This technique allows you to construct a pad of any size/shape you desire and is easy to replace or adjust. Since you have a synthetic stock, no worries about sticky stuff from the tape marring nice wood. Good luck. Wish I had the M14!

Thanks - now I'm thinking of both - trying out the eagle, and then doing the foam thing (underneath) to make it a little taller (if necessary; suspect it WILL be). I failed cutting and coloring in in school :) so I'd rather have something look good on the outside.

Where do you suggest I get good styrofoam? Is there a place online where I can order some, or get it at the post office?

thanks,

Battler.

You will need about 1.5" to get proper alignment, and only the UGLY ones provided by Fulton or Springfield will get you this high. The normal cheekpieces (eagle, etc.) can only raise about 1" max., and are useless. I had the same problem and had to fit myself a styrofoam one, and later had it covered by leather to get a neat look.

I remember a TFL'er a while back who had a really nicely dressed up M1A. I checked in my little database of articles that I store for future reference, and this is his response to where his cheekpiece came from:

"The cheekpiec is a resin accessory made for the H&K G-3 rifle, but it'll work fine on any straight-comb stock. It's held onto the comb by two sheet metal screws, making it fairly quick to attach and dismount. They come in black, but sand and paint easily. Federal Arms sells them for around $25.00, but of course, they have no website, being catalog sales only."

The cheekpiece really looked like it was custom fitted to the M1A stock in his picture. You might want to check it out with Federal Arms.

Hope this helps.

I have used and recommend the Smith Enterprises one.

Hmm. . . .

(Thanks a lot all, a lot more choices now)

BadgerArms:

I wish they showed the Smith mounted. . . how much lift did it give you? Is this on an M1A? What scope/mount combo? (if you don't mind me asking).

Do you have a picture of it mounted on the gun? (I wish Smithent. did).

Another option, if you don't mind a little work is to purchase a cutoff M14 butt stock from Fred's (1 -800-979-2144) for about 5-10 dollars. Cut the top of the comb off, shape it to fit, put a couple of screws in it, inserts if you are really ambitious, and sand and finish to match your present stock. With a little effort this can be a very professional looking setup. You may want to buy two...that way the first one can be a model for the finished product. Hope this helps.

With a little work this should be able to be made with another stock comb.
