Good carry holster for S&W 642??

As an anniversary gift, my mother gave Dad a snubbie .38+p 5-shot hammerless S&W revolver (model 642, I think?). He's getting his carry permit, and wanted one of these as all his other guns are large-framed revolvers.

Any suggestions on good carry holsters? I'm thinking of getting him one for Christmas. Then he'll be all set to carry for free (minus the cost of the permit!)!

Currently looking at both the Milt Sparks PCH-R and Summer Special (everyone needs more than one holster, right?!).

I usually carry semi-auto (P220), so thought I'd ask here.... although I really liked shooting this little J-frame and may have to get one for "summer carry" myself.

Thanks,
rvb

If it's 642 then pocket carry is a good option. I carry mine in a DeSantis Nemesis holster I bought for my G26; it doesn't work well with the Glock, the holster came out with the gun, so I carry the 642 in it, turns out to be a perfect fit. I heard Nemesis holsters designed specificly for J frame actually don't fit well, the gun ride too high in the pocket.

Have to second flinchy's remarks on the Nemesis...

for the J frame. I just got one and stuck it in the pocket of my BDUs. The handle is easily visible. There's about a 1 1/2" of holster in front of the end of the barrle no matter how much you shove it down. Also, the thing doesn't hug the gun very well and it slides out way too easily.

I'm waiting for a Sparks PCH-RI which is an all leather pocket holster. From the pictures it looks like it fits the J frame much closer and allows it to seat further down.

In the meantime, I'm using a small gun Smart carry at 12 o'clock. Not very fast on presentation, but its a BUG, not my primary.

I've used a Kramer pocket holster for years and although I have tried many others over that time, no other has come close to the quality and for concealing the "print" as the Kramer. You won't ever regret the money you spend on a Kramer.

I use an Uncle Mike's pocket holster for my 442 BUG. :o (Although I also have a Galco paddle holster should I ever decide to tote a J-frame on my belt for whatever reason.)

I will not dispute anyone's experience and preference, but I find any J frame too large for pants pocket carry. Also, I have enough other things to carry in my pants that it is not a good option. I sometimes carry a Kel Tec P32 in my pocket.

My personal favorite IWB is the Sparks EX. I do not have a kydex IWB for the J frame, but that might be a good option.

I carry my 642 in a FIST kydex pocket holster I got from Gunner's Alley (http://www.gunnersalley.com/product/FISTK5KYDEX) and am very pleased with it. The 642 fits snuggly into the holster, disengages with the right amount of effort, and it just feels good in the pocket. I also have one for my glock 30. I've also carried the 642 and some glocks in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster and an Uncle Mike's pocket holsters, but I really prefer the FISTs over the others.

Me, too. That's why I carry it in a vest, coat, or jacket pocket. :)

642 Pocket Carry

Although it is somewhat heavy for pocket carry, I use a Mika's Pocket Holster with chino/looser fitting shorts and slacks. I does the job when another method of carry would either be inconvenient or more obvious. It doesn't exactly pull your pants down, but you know it's there. With jeans, I just tuck it in a front pocket. It prints a little, but most people are so self-absorbed they don't notice or look for such things on others. I always have my CWP, so if an observant LEO questions it, no problem. Additionally, people carry so much stuff around with them in pockets or on their person, it hardly stands out these days. I am looking for the "perfect" IWB holster for it now, but will always keep the MIKA for those times when it suits the moment better. ;)
