good carbine?

I want a carbine chambered in a pistol round, preferably 9mm or 45. Mainly just used for target practice but also in a home defense role. Want to keep the cost under 400. Any good choices.
 
You might want to check out the Marlin Camp Carbines in either 9mm or .45 ACP. You can usually find them laying around gunshops. The 9mm version used S&W M59 ir M6906 magazines, so you could put pre-ban 12/15/20 round magazines in them.

I would probably go with the .45 ACP version, it uses M1911A1 magazines, and has plenty of punch too.

You might also want to try to find a nice used Ruger PC 9, which should be in your price range.

I know it isn't semi-auto or the caliber you're looking for, but both Marlin and Winchester make versions of their respective '94 actions in both .357 mag and .44 mag, both would be good choices and in your budget as well.
 
Personally, I keep picking up those little Deerfields from Ruger whenever I come across one. Can't seem to quit fondling them. I keep thinking: "you know, a guy could just plink a bit with these, or take out a few whistle pigs or even take a deer if necessary." They appear well made, light, handy....just a heckuva good concept.

If you're stuck on the 9mm or 45 the camp carbine's a good choice.
 
If you have an AR-type rifle, you could score a 9mm upper receiver for that kind of money. If you don't own an AR, a Ruger Deerfield (.44 Magnum), or a Marlin Camp Carbine would fit the bill. The Camp Carbines come in 9mm and .45ACP, they take *&* and 1911 magazines, respectively. The Deerfield only comes with 4-round rotary magazines, with no other caliber or magazine capacity available.

Also, Ruger makes the PC-9 and PC-40, which cost around $400 and take standard Ruger 9mm and .40 pistol mags.
 
Marlin, IMHO is the best of the choices, with Browning in the running as well. The Marlin 1894 cowboy is much like the 336 I like to hunt with. Browning makes a nice single shot 1885 in pistol calibers, but it isn't a carbine and is too expensive.

I think that semiautos are vastly overrated. They seem to distract a person from the fine art of sight picture and trigger control. Too easy to just blast away. ;)
 
Well the Camp carbine looks real good, a little over what I wanted to spend. A winchester in 44 mag sounds good too. Are the sub 2000s good? looking through the past posts I could'nt find a definite ya or nay.
 
Feather makes a nice takedown 9mm carbine for which 25 round magazines are readily available (from CDNN). More expensive than your requirment, though.

There's also those M3 Grease Gun semiauto carbines (ugly) and the S&W 76 carbine that was advertised in the last SWAT magazine (also ugly).
