Or should I save another $100 and get a Rem 870 ?

this is my shotgun.

Excellent worker.

Probably comes down to which one you like for asthetics.

Great, Buy it. But don't get discouraged if you have problems right away. It seems when they're not broken in they tend to double eject. Nothing the first 100 round didn't fix. But I have one from the early 70's with 1000's of rounds through it and never have a problem, they improve as they get older.

I got a Western Field (Mossberg sold thru monkey wards) at a pawn shop about six months ago. How old is this thing? Thirty, forty years old? Works like a charm...smooth as silk.
My shootin' buddy has a new Mossberg 500 that he got at Big 5 with an extra barrel for $199.95. He takes the short barrel campin'. Has never choked. I had a Remington 870 HD (home defense) and it worked fine but cost about $250.00.
Take yer choice. Best, J. Parker

Got my M500(six rnd) about 14 years ago. Sold as a "Security combo pack". - 28" modified plane bbl. - 18 1/2" cylinder bbl. -heat shield. -standard butt stock. - pistol grip. All for two "Franklins" + tax. Set up as "The Long Boy" I've hunted squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, and deer. As a riot gun its been on security details with me. And "Shorty" usually rides in the car for our road trips and vacations. Never a burp or hiccup. Feeds and functions today, the way it did 14 years ago. Put a six shell Side Saddle on it and have never felt like I'm outgunned. Best $200 I've ever spent. Buy it! You will not be sorry! -UR.

I've had a Mossberg 590 Military for some time (extended tube, heat sheild, bayonet lug). I like it, but my brother has it now, because I got a Remington 870 Police.

The 870 just feels better. Tighter, better finished, the action feels more positive, and it mounts and points better (for me). Along with many, I prefer the location of the safety on the Mossy better, but that's it.

I won't be selling the Mossy, but I'm much happier with the 870. See if you can play with (and shoot) both before you decide. I'd always pay more for what I want, even hundreds more.

Let us know what you get and how you like it.

Had one and sold it

Functionally: It was wonderful.
Asthetically: I could never keep the rust off of it. (I did my part)
Ergonomically: I was raised on Remingtons and didn't trust myself in a HD situation with that funky safety placement.

I'm saving for a Marine Magnum 870 while my super mag does the defense
