Good bullet weight for Remington 700 SPS Varmint?

I'm sure you all know it has a 26" long barrel, 1:14 twist rate. The one I'm getting is chambered in .22-250. A couple sites said that 50gr Hornady V-Max is the best, I just wanted to get some feedback from the guys on this site is all. I mainly intend on target shooting with this rifle at 200+ yards with it...and maybe even do a little coyote hunting.

Let me know what you think!! Thanks!!

I have that rifle also in .22-250. After shooting it a bit, I switched to a Timney trigger and then added a Bell and Carlson Medalist stock to replace the factory tupperware. That got me about 0.15 inches improvement in accuracy.

None of the loads mentioned below are near max loads but nevertheless, I would advise that you use caution if you intend to try any of them. It is good practice to work up to any load when using a new powder, primer, and/or a new bullet.

I've tried Varget, H380, H4895, and Reloader 15 in my Remington 700 but the top 10 loads all were achieved with Reloader 15. I think the 26 inch barrel on my rifle seems to shoot more accurately with the slower burn of Reloader 15 over the others.

After shooting lots of hand loads (458 measured groups), I find that my rifle really likes Berger #22410 55 grain bullets with 34.9 grains of Reloader-15 (nominal 3600 fps) at 2.355 C.A.O.L to an average of 0.360 at 100 yards. I also found another node using the same load at 2.370 overall length with an average of 0.416.

It also shoots Sierra # 1410 SMK 52 grain bullets with Reloader 15 at 2.355 overall length at an average of 0.438 and Sierra #1345 55 grain Spitzer Blitz bullets at 34.2 grains of R-15 (nominal 3500 fps) at an average of 0.453.
The Spitzer Biltz bullets seem to work best at a slightly lower velocity than most other bullets of the same weight.

It also shoots Sierra @ 1385 40 grain Hollow Points using 37.3 grains of Reloader-15 (nominal 3950 fps) at 2.355 overall length to an average of 0.469.

I hope this helps.

I'm the odd man out loading 22-250.... 35gr Nosler lead free over Win748... Chronographs at 4,435fps, 1/2 MOA accurate. Always like 40gr in factory ammo.

52 gr. SMK will get the job done. I have been shooting that bullet for almost 40 years and have been using 4064, 4895, H380 over the years and have been happy.

A good load is 52 gr. SMK and 38 gr H380. It won't burn up your barrel and it is deadly out to just about any range you can see a groundhog.

All of the 22-250s I ever loaded for really like a 52 or 53 gr HP over IMR3031 for accuracy. For practicality, however, I load a 55 gr over W748 (it meters a lot better and makes loading very smooth).

Thanks for all of the replys!! I think I'm going to look into reloading 40gr V-max bullets. A lot of my friends have said a lot of good about them as well. I do plan on trying other weights in the future! Thanks again!

As posted elsewhere, my go-go bullet for sod poodles is 40 gr Blitz Kings. Imr 4064 and Varget are the powders that work best for me.

I have used 40 gr Vmax and 50 gr Vamx with good success. But it always ends up being the Blitz King that work best.:D
