Good ankle holster for Glock G27 for back-up?

Rainbow Six

I am seeking feedback on various ankle holsters for on duty back-up carry of my Glock G27. Obviously some sort of retention would be desireable to keep the gun secured where it should be in the event of foot chases, wrestling matches, etc... Any feedback from experienced ankle gun toters on different brands and/or models would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rainbow6, there is really only one choice. Lou Alessi's Ankle Rig. Hands down the most comfortable, well made, secure ankle holster around.

I've had one for a Glock 19 for a bunch of years and have never had a problem. No pain, and never had to worry about the weapon falling out of the holster (including those stressful situations.) Even a weapon as large as a 19 just goes away.

It's expensive, about 90$; but, you won't be sorry six months down the road when you're cussing a 35$ rig.

Stay safe.

I agree with Jack. I've had one for 2 years, never had trouble. Up and down stairs several times per day, usually at a fast jog. He's also right on the comfort issue, I can't even tell that it's on. It seems to be very durable as a couple of weeks ago I ended up in knee deep water with the thing on. Wore it home soaked, as work is not friendly towards the idea of CCW. Cleaned the gun and let the holster air dry for a few days at room temperature. You would never even know it had been submerged. The down side in your case is they don't have a thumb strap. As I said before I run up & down stairs close to 70 times per day, and I've never had an oops gun on the ground incident. If you really want a thumb strap I'll bet he would put one on if you asked. It does not have a calf strap either, but it doesn't need one.
For the record I tried a $35 dollar rig. BIG mistake. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!!!

I have not tried the more expensive rigs, but I did carry a Glock 27 in an Uncle Mike's nylon rig without the calf strap for a while. I am required by regs to have a thumbsnap on the holster. It was secure, although it occasionally would turn somewhat. Ultimately, I just found the Glock to be too clunky, and I went back to a Smith 640 in the same rig. It weighs the same, but with less bulk. YMMV

I used an early model of the Renegade (9-10 years old) extensively with my 640. I liked the way it had no cant, making it position neutral, allowing you to wear it on the inside opposite ankle for strong hand, or in reverse position on the inside strong side ankle with the butt forward, allowing substantial ease of use for both hands even with a thumb snap. Most holsters make you pick which ankle and position you are going to use it with. I tried my Renegade (the 640 holster) with my Glock 27, and decided against it because the gun was still klunky and I felt that the velcro was not as secure and the gun managed to move around a lot more than with the Uncle Mike's. (Someone may know more about the holster made specifically for the Glock.) The Uncle Mike's has a "D" ring type thing, and the velcro strap goes through that and is pulled back before attaching to the other part of the velcro. (Sorry, not a technical description.) The Renegade did not have that feature. You just wrap it around the ankle and mate one part of the velcro to the other. So I continued to use the Uncle Mike's for the 640 after abandoning the 27. Have there been any product advances with the Renegade that I should consider? I would love to go back to it.

Thanks for the replies. I've read good things about the Alessi rig. I think I may get one and try it out. I've already been the Uncle Mike's route before. That's what prompted the "good" specification in my request for feedback. :D I hated the Uncle Mike's nylon rig I had before. It really let the G27 dig into my ankle!

I think the Alessi has the "D" ring doesn't it? I don't like the idea of just wrapping velcro around and overlapping it.

I have a few ankle holsters, including ones from Alessi, Desantis and Galco. While most people speak very highly of Alessi, I am not particularly fond of mine. It seems to be of very high quality, but it just doesn't fit me well. Unfortunately, it's the only ankle rig I know of made for the Kel-Tec P11.

The Galco and Desantis ankle rigs, on the other hand, I love. These are the neoprene bands that shut with velcro, have sheepskin on the part that touches the ankle, and a leather holster section for the gun. To me, these are the finest in the world. They usually run about 60 bucks, but you can find them on ebay for around 40. Worth every penny. I have a Desantis for my PPK, and Galco's for my J-frames. The best!

I like my Desantis Apache for a J-frame. Even at the end of shift I don't notice it. I have no doubt that an Alessi is of finer quality, but I think the simple neoprene works best for an ankle rig.

I use a DeSantis "Apache" also.

Inexpensive and very comfortable. However, I've only had it for three weeks and I suppose my impressions could change. Right now, I think it's one of the best holsters I've ever owned.

If you haven't already bought an ankle rig, I would highly recommend Ken Null's holsters. I've had two of his ankle holsters, and they are very comfortable. I've tried cheaper and more expensive holsters, but his are the best I've used. I got him to put some extra long velcro to fit around my duty boots. He has a web site, but can't remember the exact address.

Have used Lou Alessi's Ankle Holster for over 4 years for a chunky G27. He has designed it to provide the appropriate retention when running and those times whe one finds himself rolling around on the ground for whatever reason. The one I have has the Velcro/leather strap pass thru an oblong metal "ring" then folds back on itself.

Rainbow Six,

I strongly disagree with Jack19 on the Alessi. I have an Alessi and a Renegade. The Renegade is far more comfortable and the Alessi tends to drop below the ankle bone (so the muzzle is almost touching the ground) unless you wear a boot or strap it on
uncomfortably tight. If you look at both the reasons are obvious. The Renegade elastic/velcro strap is wider than the Alessi and the Renegade strap can be fitted in a cone shape (with the narrow end down) so it will POSITIVELY stay above the ankle in
ALL situations.

I somewhat agree with skevlar. My Alessi, even after factory re-stretching, is so tight I have to press VERY hard on the slide to get it to holster and it will never come out accidentally because it takes about 50 pounds of pull to get my Glock out as the Alessi
holster tries to go up my pants to my knee!

I use th fobus ankle holster for my g27. It has a wide vlecro strap and a padded wrap around my ankle. It is pretty comfortable, and I am happy with it.

George and I may not agree on 9mm ammo but we do on ankle rigs....WYO, my renegade is an elastic band with velcro...no d-ring and that is exactly why I like it....the elastic is wide and stretchs to pull the gun in tight....the d-ring tightens to your leg but doesn't pull the whole thing in any closer like the elastic does....the one for my 442 has a strap that snaps over the gun but it is only for putting in and out...when you need it in a hurry, just pull....I like that...revisit your old friend...I think you'll like it..oh, and the new ones have leather pouches for the gun, I think yours may nylon...

Don't shoot, what model Renegade do you have? I went to the site you mentioned earlier and saw so many choices. Mine was nylon, and it also stretched over time to where it was hard to get the velcro to mate for a tight fit. I usually end up with 25 holsters for each carry gun, so I'll probably order another. Does it still have a neutral cant? I would like to go back to butt forward on my strong side leg--makes me feel better in the interview position and when seated in parked vehicles.
