Good And Cheap Ear Protection

Just a quick product note - I bought some Howard Leight "Cyclone" folding earmuffs. They are comfortable, offer an excellent 29 Decibel noise reduction, and were just $20. Thumbs Up! :D

Sourcing

I bought them at the Kittery Trading Post - a big outdoors store up in Kittery, Maine, but they seem to be widely available - a quick google search turned up a Handguns Magazine review of them just now...

If you get the Harbor Freight Tool catalogue they have electronic ear muffs that go on sale from time to time. There are a LOT of shooters at the matches I go to, myself included, that use them. They are a well made no frills product.

The more expensive ones have a mic on each ear but these only have a mic on the right ear. That's never been a problem for me.

On line at: Harbor Freight

I just double checked and they are currently on sale for $19.95 Sale

Cheap Ear Protection

If you watch the Hatbor freight flyers you can get just regular hearing protectors for about $2 a pair. I use them and find that they work just fine. :)

+1

Indoors I still put the foam plugs in with the ear muffs over them. I find I don't finch as much from other shooters.

At the outdoor range I usually just wear the HF ones.

I'd also have to say that I prefer the earplug type of protection over the headphone style. Those headphone style set-ups make my ears sweat something fierce on a hot day at the range.

Mine too but there is a "sox" that fits over the earset that helps quite a bit. I usually drop mine around my neck inbetween stages at an IDPA or USPSA match.

Excellent information about hearing protection including a table of gunfire noise levels.

Home Depot carries the red NRR 21 Stow Aways for $18. When they're not red they're sold to us as "Shotgunners" for a higher price. For $14 you can get the NRR 20 muffs.

Regardless of price, if the muff doesn't have an NRR with it you should not buy it.
