Good(and cheap) .38 Special revolver

I'm looking to get a good, well made .38 special revolver, any barrel length(as long as it can be cut down), and as long as it takes standard(or easy to find) grip blanks. I want a bit of a project, but I don't want to sink a ton of cash into it...

//EDIT

Oh yeah, and the parts need to be easy to find/get/machine

S&W Model 10 is the go. There are plenty of them around. I wouldn't go cutting the barrel down though - get one the right size in the beginning.

Charter arms snub's

There not Smiths by a long shot, and have a shorter life span but function well and can be had used for a little under 200.

Right now, the market (at least here in No'Texas) seems to be awash with all sorts of S&W K-frame 'turn-in's from various security-n-law-enforcement agencies. A sampling from my FLD shows, for example, a Model 12 Airweight snubby costing $225, and a Model 64 4" and Model 15 4" (adj sight version of the Model 10) both priced at $175. Are are in good-to-excellent condition.

I'd rather get a used S&W K-frame than a new Rossi, but that's just me.

I agree w/Sir Wm, et al , My S&W Milt-Police .38sp 4" has been with me for nearly 30 years, and I fire it regularly..They don't make him like they used to.. I use it for concealed carry in a shoulder rig and sometimes use my favorite 686 in a hip holster. I've seen these .38's at various Gun Shows for around $200 and there are plenty of good one's out there.

I got a Model 10 from J&G and it's a sweet revolver. I got the very good condition and found it to have some scratches and a ding in the grips, but it was hardly ever shot. The crane is just starting to get sloppy, but I won't have to worry about it for quite some time.

Another vote for the S&W 10 or 64 here. I've got an old M&P (in 38 S&W), and a 64 in 38 special. Good shooters, both of them, mild recoil, great accuracy, and a decent trigger.

I am goin to go with an M10 I think, I'll see what I can get at teh gun show. Shape of the finish doesn't really matter, as long as its not pitted or rusted since I plan on refinishing it... My dad and I are going to make a 2 1/2" barrel, bobbed hammer gun; he was a gunsmith/ffl in the 70's(sort of does a bit of everything) and still knows most of the stuff. I wanted a bit of a project gun so, yeah. I know what'll need to be done, and I got the stuff so. Anything under $200 will do, but I prefer to do so in person ;) I already have an M10 that I like(and is in great condition), so I'll just see if I can snag another one for cheap.
