i think i payed $450 in 1999(right before y2k) for a romanian sar "ak47" and have no complaints at all. 100% reliable with any 7.62x39mm ammo and pretty accurate out to 100 yards.

now im thinking about buying a polish "ak47" with a under folder stock. are the polish ones good?

is it just wasr ak's that are sometime problematic?

From what I've seen the new Romanian M10-762 models with rails, flash hider etc. are getting nice reviews. They are $499 at some places.

The problem with the cheaper AK's (and some expensive ones) are overall build quality. You can definitely find one in your price range that is nice but see if you can look it over first. Check for canted sights/gas blocks, smooth bolt operation.

Look at places like Centerfire Systems, Atlantic Firearms and Classic Arms if you can't find any locally.

Do you mean, Other than a Saiga for $329 for the rifle sporter-version that y ou can keep as a rifle-looking rifle or convert yourself, or even buy a converted Saiga into the actual AK type from classicarms.us for $499 (Or even buy the top of the top of the line from Arsenal, a SGL-21 Saiga for like $700-$800...)..

You mean, best OTHER than Saiga, cause that is really wat you want at less money than you want to spend.... which calls for a nice big smiley face and expensive cup of beverage of ur choice in celebratioN!.

H*oooooraay guns!

If you want the underfolder, get the Polish underfolder. If you're not crazy about the underfolder part and just want a basic AKM, get a WASR. WASRs are good guns if built properly. If you can't check them out locally, I recommend Henderson. They guarantee their rifles to be free of canted sights or mag wobble (excessive). They've got the Polish for $479 now as well. You may be able to get one cheaper but I'd rather have the guarantee if I couldn't inspect it first.

I am not sure about the Polish models, but I have 2 WASR 10 Romanian AKs built by Century Arms and after the initial hiccup with the second one (embarrassingly documented here) both have been nothing but very reliable. If your into the quad rails, folding/T6 stocks etc. they usually come with some sort of tactical accessory. Or you can get them with basic wooden furniture which is cheaper most of the time. And they fall into your price range.
