Good .40 defense load? Too many to choose from!

Hey guys can't pick a good Hollow Point for my .40 Sig 229. I went to the gun shop and got no where fast. He put about 7 diffrent kinds of hollow Points on the damn counter. I heard the FBI uses Golden Saber 165gr in their .40's for duty. I guess it did the best out of all ammo tested in that caliber. I have heard good things about the Gold Dot 155gr also. It seems to be the general opinion is to stay with 155 and 165gr bullets. Are 180gr slugs to heavy or slow? I don't think feeding will be an issue with a Sig. Never saw a Sig FTF yet. Any help would be great.
Thanks,45automan

I use Triton's Hi-Vel in my G27. I think they are great. I tried some at home ballistics testing. My brother and I soaked a bundle of newspaper in water overnight, then took it to the range. I shot at it from about 4 or 5 yds. I tried the Hi-Vel's and Hydra-Shok's. The Hydra-Shok's did pretty good, but the Hi-Vel's were awesome. They went in about 12 inches and opened up all the way. We measured them when we got back and they expanded to .72. I think they are a great defensive load.

I carry 135 grain Federal HydroShoks in my Beretta Cougar 8040.

I was investigating the same thing about a month ago for use in my Beretta 96 Border Marshal. I evaluated 155 gr. Winchester Silvertip hollow points, Fiocchi 145 gr. jacketed hollow points, and Remington 165 gr. Golden Saber .40S&W. I couldn't tell much difference in accuracy or muzzle flip, and none failed to perform. Muzzle energies are similar for all three. Fiocchi is half the price of the other two.

Where I did find a big difference was in muzzle flash in darkness, with Remington's Golden Saber producing much less than the others. Rem advertises "their" advanced powders with reduced flash.

So, my practice is with several boxes of Fiocchi because of the cost factor, finishing with a box of Remington, which I load for personal protection.

I've had good luck with 155gr HydraShoks and same weight GoldDots in my 23 and 27. I carry the GoldDots. Both are accurate and have never had any type failures.

155 gr. Gold dots for me ;)
