Caliber: does not matter, but I like .357
Barrel: 4 to 6 inches.
New/Used: I don't care about buying used as long as it looks alright and functions.
Use: blasing paper at the range every so often and home protection.

And BTW, how would you guys go about convincing your father to let you get a handgun. I have 2 shotguns and 5 rifles but he seems cautious about leting me have a handgun.

Uh.. my dad didn't really care to be honest...

I would just for a first handgun try to save up to about $350 and get a 6" GP100 and tell him you want to practice pistol marksmanship(which is true, just long barrels tend to ease fears for some odd reason..).

The 6" GP's are HOT for sure.. accurate buggers to, and quite a few grip options.

Might also consider a Blackhawk.. that is definatly not as offensive as most handguns, since its single action :D Saw a 4 5/8" one for a small sum of $250, with a 9mm conversion cylinder at a show a while back.... $250-300 is about right for a blackhawk

get a Ruger Dude :) .I paid 275 for my 6" stainless and put a whole lot more money in it since.

If I ever found a 6" Gp100 for that around here.. it would be mine so fast, I'd just have to beg and borrow to get it :D

Get a .357 so you can shoot both .38spl and .357magnum.
Buy used so you can afford a S&W and not have the lock.
So far I have bought a S&W Model 66 for $250, a S&W Model 60-9 for $250, and a Colt King Cobra for $350 (I know, that's above your limit, but it's close.) I passed on a S&W Model 19-2 for $225, and a Model 28 for $250. I sometimes wish I had not.

I finally realized that I was shooting .38spl almost exclusively. Once I realized that, the door was open for the .38specials and I was hooked. The guns are out there. Scour the for sale ads, the pawn shops, and keep looking. I hear that Ruger makes a pretty good .357 too.......... ;)

How to convince Dad? Either move out, or get a lock for the gun and give him the key.

RM Vivas & Son was recommended to me as a source of very nice used revolvers for good prices. I was very pleased with his service and the used .38 S&W I bought from him.

He also lists some of his wares on Auctionarms.com under seller name "RMVivas", and you might get a better price bidding than his regular sale price (which is a good price, too). Right now he just has some small Colt and S&W .38s on auction, but his site shows .357s and full size .38s.

I'm 15 and I can't exactly move out yet and when I do it will be to Camp Pendelton(sp?) California. It is my understanding that if you live west of the mississippi(sp?) river and enlist in the Marine Corps then you go to Cali. and if you live east of it you go to Parris Island, but I'm not 100% sure.

Hey Xavier! That pic of the 66 made me drool. Now why did you have to go and make me drool?!

Since your Dad will have to purchase the weapon for you, then the thing to do is get him involved. See if you can get into a Handgun Safety Class with him if he is not a shooter. Then go to the rental ranges and rent a variety.

If I was looking at the USMC in three years, I would just rent as many different guns as I could for the duration. You certainly don't want to sell them at a loss, and storage will be a concern while you are away.

Kudos to you for taking an interest in the Corps. Not enough young people even consider serving. I'm sure that if you tell your recruiter you will only sign the dotted line if he gets orders to the Island for you, he will accomodate you..... :D
While you are in Uncle Sugar's Misguided Children, keep in mind who signs your check. Navy. ;)

Storage isn't a huge issue because my parents will have plenty of unused space and the only place I can rent guns where I live is VERY expensive. I do have the ability to borrow my aunt's .357 and my uncle's glock 17 though. I have before and I like both but revolvers are so cool.

My dad is involved in my shooting, he just has a thing with handguns I guess.

Quote: I'm sure that if you tell your recruiter you will only sign the dotted line if he gets orders to the Island for you, he will accomodate you.....

and while he's at that I'm sure he will GUARANTEE! an 0331 MOS (machinegunner) slot for me. ;)

No need in worrying about what kind of handgun to buy now, but focus on getting your father to go along with the idea. Being just 15 and living at home means his word is the law of the land.
Since you have some access to a .357 mag try convincing your dad to get a 22.lr handgun for plinking and drop the home defense qualification. He may think of that as his job and don't want to hear of that from you. You must remember that most posters on these forums are adults and responsible for their actions. You unfortunately is the responsiblity of your father and he will also have to answer to your actions.

Go for a taurus

Somehow I'm partial to Taurus, maybe a model 66, new around 310-350, or a 617 or 627 in .357, all very inexpensive, problably just over $300. You may find a good deal in a used, as they go for less than a used Smith.

come on rugerdude you have plenty of the guns already you said you were lucky to get tahat sks of yours. The other shotgun was bought so you could shoot skeet come on give it rest.

Skeetin'870

Handgunin' has no rival in my book. Might be the same with him, after he tries it :p

Besides, you can NEVER have to many guns :D

//EDIT
Buy a Taurus.. and you won't get something near as good as a K frame or a Ruger..

Skeetin! WHAT DID YOU SAY!?!? You just don't understand. :(

As far as the HD aspect of the gun, I meant as in for him to have it in his room because I am only over there weekends and wednesdays. My mother might let me get a handgun, but my dad takes me to the range and I think he would frown on me going through my mom because he said no.

Maybe he will consider it more when I get a job (which is hopefully this summer, and also the only way i'd get enough cash for a handgun). Handguns are fun, but more fun than skeet? I don't know....

I'm thinking of borrowing my aunt's .357 and making sure he's okay with me doing it and go to the range with him and show him that it's not an evil death machine.

I'd also like a .22 revolver, but I don't want a single action, or a small frame.

Ask "DAD" to get you a Ruger GP-100 'blued' ( because it's cheaper ) in 6" bbl. format so 'you can learn to shoot a handgun accurately and safely'... ;)
If he goes for it, NEVER sell that gun!
If he goes for it, LEARN to shoot it!

You'll get a very versatile handgun and share it with "DAD"!

Show him this post. Don't be shy.
I hope he enjoys the purchase!
Maybe he'll buy it for himself...and then GIVE it to you... :)

YES! Show him this post. Let him know your plans, your potential interest in handguns, get him involved in your search and comparison.
You have quite a selection of excellent quality used revolvers for under $300. Save your money, take your time, search for what fits you best. Revolvers are very individual, subjective guns. What really suits one may not suit someone else. There is no substitute for hands on shopping when buying a revolver.

DAD: Sounds like you have a great kid there. How about it ?
