Good .223 Rifle

Christmas is coming up and I have been a good little boy so I want a new present. I want a good .223 I have looked at the Ruger Mini 14 with a Stainless Steel finish. I don't want it over $500 though. It is just going to be used for plinking and casual shooting, and possibly to stop a 2 legged varmit if it would get in the house. Thanks For yalls help :)

I just bought a new-in-box stainless/polymer Mini-14 Ranch Rifle for well under $500 from Sporting Arms Co.

Tom's in TX and I'm in CA so it had to go through a FFL transfer, but that was simple enough. Just avoid the FFL dealers who charge you a percentage of your purchase price and try to collect sales tax on top. I only paid a flat $30/firearm and that INCLUDED the CA state background-check fees!

I've had two blued Minis and two stainless. They all served me quite well. With Weaver K4s, they all shot around 1-1/2 MOA. Never a failure to feed or fire.

I now have a Ruger 77 Mk II in .223. I replaced the factory trigger with a Timney; it's a 1/2-MOA shooter.

FWIW,

My FFL transfer dealer is in Norther California (Napa to be exact). I found the dealer using the FFL search engine at GunBroker.com: click on "For Buyers" and then "Find a Transfer Dealer."

The dealer was:

R & D Guns & Gunsmithing
727 Lincoln Ave #C
Napa, CA 94558
email: dworchid@aol.com
phone: 707-257-1894

I worked with Dan who is a great guy: fair and honest. Note that R & D's listing on BunBroker.com shows their transfer fee to be $25. This is old; their per firearm fee is now $35 (flat). Dan gave me a $10 discount because I bought two at the same time ($30 each). Although R & D is a very small shop, I did buy some other merchandise just to give them the extra, well-deserved, business.

Ruger Mini-14

Hi, I like my Mini-14 stainless, and its stainless THROUGHOUT, not just the barrel and receiver, hard to go wrong with ANY Ruger.

Mini's are ok, but they are not known for their accuracy. They are reliable though, and there are tons of accessories out there for them.
