Is the gold or brass colored dot on the underside of the buttstock purely cosmetic? Does it represent a balance point?

It is where you have your monogram engraved.

Nice looking express rifle, I haven't seen many hammerless double grip underlevers. What calibre and make?

From the sale page:

JAMES PURDY & SONS DOUBLE BARRELLED RIFLE MADE IN 1903. 400/360 Nitrocal 26" Barrels. Self opening under lever, non ejector. Rose and scroll Purdy type engraving.

It sold for 22,000 Canadian

Thanks for the response.

I only monogram my undies. Usually in a Rorschach ink blot style.

It's not mine Scorch. I laying out a build design for a custom Ruger #1 and I'm trying to incorporate some old world design.

After months of saving I finally purchased the donor rifle last night. I have the wood acclimating to my environment and a stock carver waiting in the wings. Unfortunately a double rifle is not in my near future, but I should have a humdinger single shot. I think I will pass on the escutcheon monogram plate. I don't think the gold color will mesh well with my silver accents. I might enlay (french?) an engraved silver escutcheon plate for the forearm screw (Browning shotgun design.)
