Gold Dot - Speer or Proload??

Anyone have an opinion of the advantages or disadvantages of the Speer gold dot versus the Proload gold dot?

The Proload seems about 50% less expensive, but am I giving anything up for the cheaper price i.e. does one produce a greater flash than the other etc.

For a while there really was a difference in Speer's Gold Dot and Proload's. In the old days, Proload had a hotter load, i.e. higher muzzle velocity, but eventually Speer raised theirs as well, and I don't believe that there is much of a difference now days... You can tell the newer Gold Dot loads from the older ones because the newer Gold Dot bullets have six serrations, while the older ones had eight? (Gee, forgot how many serrations the old ones had for sure.) I believe the change in serrations was to help with deeper penetration.

Proload makes an excellent round, and does not exhibit any more muzzle flash than other premium rounds. It is also a very consistent round, i.e. small deviations in muzzle velocity, which translates to an accurate round... I don't think that you can go wrong with Proload...

Something to think about in terms of price, is that I believe Speer packages the Gold Dot in boxes of 25 (or at least used to), while Proload only has 20 per box...

Buy from Proload. You can support the under dog, get top quality ammo, and pay less. If you call in your order most of the time John, the owner, answers the phone. If you have questions he can answer them. Are you going to get that kind of product support from Speer/Blount etc?

I've found that Proload ammo has less muzzle flash than CCI/Speer's Gold Dots. This isn't based on a very large sample, though, and it's a comparison of the 185gr Gold Dot .45 with the 165gr Proload .40.

I don't know but the fact that Pro Load uses Speer's bullet makes me think since Speer designed it they are better. I guess i feel that way since i feel that way about berettas vs. Tauruses. However with the berettas they are obviously better IMNSHO and i don't know about these bullets much.

I would probably take the Speers but i honestly don't really know why!?!

Bullwinkle, Actually i hear Speer is very supportive of their products. They are 1 of the only companies that will let certain people go to their factory and (at their charge) test their bullets head to head against other manufacturer's bullets. I think i read that the guys from Firearms Tactical Institute when to Speer and they tested them against many other bullets and i think the speer came out on top.

I have trust in Gold-dots and Hydra-shocks for defense. i feel that weapon and ammo confidence is important in a defense gun so i don't want to carry something i don't trust as much even if its just in my mind.
