Golani Sporter

Saw one of these recently, wasn't able to shoot it, but it looked and handled well. Seemed well put together. How's the reliability and accuracy? Any help will be appreciated.

I have 2 real Gallil's, (made semi) bought them in Israel, Ive heard really bad things about the Golani Rifles, if it's from CAI I'd take a pass. Take a chance to shoot a few magazines through it first if you get a chance.

Standard Century built gun -- spotty QC. Some are good to go, some aren't. If you're going to buy one, I'd do some research on issues people have had with their warranty service and make sure you're informed going into it.

One shouldn't knock a product simply because it's from CAI. They do a few things right. Sadly the Golani sporter isn't one of those things. I had one, and there's really not that much positive that I can say about it.

It looks cool, the free-floating gas tube is a nice design element, it seems capable of being accurate (but the rear sight on mine didn't seem to hold zero).

There's some features that are supposed to be good, but in practice aren't necessarily so great. The up-turned charging handle for example, while in theory is a good idea can lead you to bust up your hand on the rear sight assembly, it also gets in the way of attaching optics, if you're into that. The thumb safety digs into your hand if you shoot left handed, and seems too stiff to actually use if you shoot right-handed.

Then there's the bad things. The workmanship on the milled receiver is pretty crappy, badly finished. The gun is really overweight, I've had a AR in .223/5.56 and currently have an AK in .223/5.56 as well, both are significantly lighter and both still have negligible recoil so there's simply no reason for a weapon of that class and caliber to be so heavy. The gun also seemed to be picky about mags (which by the way are a good deal harder to find and more expensive than AR or AK magazines). The rear sight didn't seem to hold zero, no matter what position it was in, it would shift ever so slightly with each shot, enough to throw you off.

These guns are probably around $550, if I were looking for a gun and had only that amount to spend, I'd definitely look at something else.

If you really like the idea of a .223/5.56 AK-style rifle, I'd suggest getting a Saiga .223 and converting it. It's what I did, it even takes Galil mags (and I used a Galil-style foregrip) and is hands down a much better gun and it cost me less money than buying a Golani.

I need to tell you, my Golani Sporter was such a POS I lost money in a trade simply to get it out of my sight. :barf:
It jammed every 6-8 rounds, beat hell out of cases (a big dent on each case!) inaccurate, canted sight, and more. Weighed twice what a .5.56 should, looked like monkeys finished it, - sorry about going on, I really hated this rifle.

Spoke to a dealer yesterday who said my problems are not unusual.

I shudder every time I see a Century rifle.

Wow lots of hate coming the golani's way. Well i purchased one about 3 years ago. i bought it used with about 200 rounds thru it. Its turned out to be a great gun very accurate for what it is about 2 or 3 inch groups at 100 yards with irons, i have put about 800 rounds thru it. My rear holds zero and it has not once jammed with everything from brown bear and wolf to speer law enforcement ammunition. I use all types of magazines orolites, steels and tapco polymers. i say if you can get a good price and you can inspect it and preferably fire it then i would say go for it. If not I would be leary of it.

My Golani is a tackdriver as well, and is very reliable. It actually outshoots my IMI Galil (to my horror). No problem with canted sights, ejector peening or loose topcover, it just works.

If you buy the $549.99 Golani from Centerfire and it is not perfect ,send it to Hillbilly arms and have Jeff make it a winner . Jeff is the Galil Master, and his prices are more than fair . FYI Copes have the black nitrate oxide barrels for 69.00 ,if you don't like the USA GM barrel they ship with . CIA is spotty, but it can be made right cheap.;)
